The Madera National Guard was organized on December 3, 1906 as the Madera Rifle and Pistol Club. The first national guard unit was activated at Fort Huachuca in 1912. On November 5, 1914, the first sergeant major of the Madera National Guard was appointed. The United States declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917, and soon after the national guard units were mobilized throughout California. On October 25th of that year, General Disorderly Conduct charges against two soldiers of the Madera National Guard were published in the local paper. This action led to a public outcry which pressured Congress to declare a national emergency for California due to the high military tensions at that time. On November 15th of 1917, Gouverneur Morris signed into law Public Law 8-205 which created the United States Army's First Brigade Combat Team based out of Fresno and moved from Sacramento eastward towards Reno where it would eventually become known as Task Force 606

On July 4, 1870, the organization became the Madera Militia and on November 5, 1870, it became the Madera National Guard. The unit was redesignated as the Madera Rifle and Pistol Company on September 8, 1898. It was again redesignated as the 1st Battalion of the California National Guard on October 1, 1951. The battalion served in both World War II and Korea. In 1966-1968 it served in Vietnam under Task Force Westmoreland. When national guard duty ended for veterans in 1968 they were replaced by Reservecomponent units until state passage of Assembly Bill 1093 brought about their full reestablishment effective January 1st 1969 with a new headquarters at 555 Sutter Street in downtown Madera

Madera is part of the East Bay Area of San Francisco and it is located on the north side of the San Joaquin River. Madera's ZIP code is 95604. The history of Madera began with Spanish colonists who arrived in 1769. The area that now includes Madera was first explored by Juan Bautista de Anza in 1824 and his party discovered a well-water route to Stockton from central California. In 1846, surveyors named Campo Buena Vista after José Joaquín Cámpora y Pacheco, captain general of Mexican forces occupying Californias during the Alta California Rebellion (1845-1848). A post office called Campo Buena Vista was established in 1851; it changed its name to Madera in 1865 when it became part of Contra Costa County. In 1901, madreño entrepreneur Antonio García set up a tannery near what is now downtown Madera to produce leather for shoes and saddles. García also grew grapes for wine production and sold them from his winery door step. In 1917,madero artist Roberto Rivera moved to town from Redding to begin Painting There series which focused on regional landscapes as seen through an American Indian lens In 1946, madero artist Leland Stanford Junior founded Stanford University in nearby Palo Alto as one element of his larger vision forStanford City (later Stanfords Park). Nearby agricultural land had been donated by wealthyTexan ranchers including James Buchanan Richardson who had purchased Rancho Rinconada adjacent tomadero before its sale to missionaries led by Father Solano Ohlsson in 1867 After years of development work led by local entrepreneur Dan Cronin funded by contributions from local farmersthe new school opened its doors on September 15th , 1928 with studentsfrom all over Northern California; among these were future Nobel Prize winners Enrico Fermi and Julius Erving
