The Navy has a long and rich history in Madera, California. The city was first founded in 1836 by Captain George Vancouver as the port of San Francisco Bay. The City of Madera was incorporated on January 1, 1907. In 1912, the United States Congress designated Madera as an Naval Base. The base served as a training ground for naval officers until World War II when it became a naval armament center. In 1954, the Naval Weapons Station (NWS) was established at Madera and is still used today to store weapons and ammunition for the navy. It is also home to the Research Laboratory for Missile Defense Studies (RLMS). The city has also been home to several warships during its history including USS "San Francisco" (1898) and USS "Alaska" (1948). These ships were used in various patrols around the Bay Area and off California coast before being decommissioned in the 1970s. Since 1978, Navy Ships Museum has been located at NWS which displays both old and new warships from all branches of service along with historical photos and videos dating back to 1898-1978. This museum is open 9am-5pm daily except Tuesdays when it’s closed for lunch due to renovation work on adjacent buildings.

Madera is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 26,045 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Contra Costa County by population and is also the fastest-growing city in Northern California. The name Madera comes from the Ohlone word madre meaning "mother". The first European to explore and settle what would become Contra Costa County was José Joaquín de San Miguel y Costilla, who arrived on horseback on November 3, 1769. He named his new land El Dorado because of its abundance of gold ore. Costilla's party traveled northwest through present-day Livermore Valley before arriving in what is now Madera on December 18, 1772. For over two decades no one else penetrated this part of the707 miles (1,600 km) long coast east of San Francisco Bay. In 1836 Antonio Maria Mendoza founded an adobe mission called Mission Concepción del Norte near present-day Martinez on Nob Hill in order to supply settlers with water and food for their farms north of San Francisco Bay. The mission failed due to lack of resources and converted natives against Mendoza until he moved his headquarters to Madera after being driven out by Native Americans in 1839. In 1860 John Sutter established an agricultural outpost here known as Sutter's Fort which later became Berkeley after General James Hahn's army destroyed it during the Mexican–American War John Sutter also founded a foundry that provided goods for export to China during these years; however most goods were turned into piracy when trade restrictions were lifted following World War II Establishment of oil production began at AnheuserBusch’s Pleasanton refinery in 1952 In 1960s Madera had an economy that included agriculture and light manufacturing . However since 2000s it has become more diverse with major contributions from technology segments such as biotech, biotechnology services, data center manufacture
