The history of Madera began with Spanish settlers who arrived in 1846. The town was founded on October 17, 1876 by James Swayne and his wife Anna Maria Swayne. In 1916, madera was named after General George Custer because he fought during the American Civil War in that state. Madera, California is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Madera is located on the shore of Lake Merritt and about 20 miles east of San Francisco. It is one of the most heavily developed towns in Contra Costa County. The first post office was established in 1853, and the first store opened in 1865. The community name "Madera" may be derived from an early Spanish name for Monterey Bay or perhaps Mayacamas River because of its similarity to these terms in pronunciation. In any case, Madera became an official town name on December 15th, 1903. Madera's center has been located at what is now Main Street since that time. Madera began as a small agricultural settlement founded by Japanese Americans who had been living in Northern California during World War II before being relocated to the Bay Area after Japan's surrender. After their resettlement ended, many of these Japanese Americans returned to Madera and started businesses such as sushi restaurants and sake bars which continues to this day among some white residents as well as many Asian American descendants from those original settlers; according to 2007 Census data there are over 1/3 Japanese American residents still living in Madera today). The early growth of Madera can be traced back to when two brothers - Hiramatsu Ando and Shigeo Kato - purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) along the then unnamed lakebed north of where downtown now stands for $4 per acre (1 hectare). They named their land Rancho La Honda after Captain John Atherton's ranch that lay adjacent – across from present-day Interstate 80 – on what would become known as Kato Road (now US 101).
