Malibu, California is a well-known location for beauty and luxury products. The town was founded in 1892 by a group of British colonists who were looking for a new place to live after their shipwreck on the coast of Mexico. The name Malibu comes from the Spanish word malibu, meaning "water country." The first people to live in Malibu were the Tongva people. In 1770, these Native Americans started living in what is now downtown Malibu. A few years later, Englishman John Muir discovered this area and named it after himself. Muir had been hiking along the Coast Ranges when he saw some wildflowers in an area he called "the Valley of the Moon." After seeing this beautiful landscape, Muir decided that this was where he wanted to live and began exploring the area. In 1892, two men named Arthur Hughes and James Waugh bought land around what is now downtown Malibu. They built a home known as Hughes House which still stands today. This house was used as a summer home by many famous people such as President Woodrow Wilson and actress Clara Bow. In 1923, Hughes sold his property to millionaire William Randolph Hearst who turned it into one of the most popular areas in Los Angeles County for entertainment purposes. Hearst's mansion became known as Hearst Castle. Hearst died in 1951 but his estate continued to be used for events until 1976 when it was donated to UCLA School of Medicine by movie mogul Irving Thalberg Jr.. The school has since used part of Hearst's estate for research purposes including studies on how diseases are spread through contact with skin or water droplets from animals or humans being treated in surgery or autopsy rooms at UCLA Medical Center
