The Coast Guard has been providing essential services to the people of Malibu, California for over 80 years. The Coast Guard’s motto is “A readiness to protect and serve.” The Coast Guard Station in Malibu was established on May 3rd, 1919 as a result of the Malibu Earthquake. At that time, there were only six Coast Guardsmen assigned to the station. In 1951, the station became an airfield and was used by both military and civilian aircraft. On December 2nd, 1957, the Air Force moved its headquarters from El Segundo to Malibu and using this new location, the Air National Guard began flying missions out of Malibu Airport. In 1988, after many requests from residents in Malibu for a more permanent stop at their beachside community, the Coast Guard relocated its main depot ashore at Point Dume Park. After Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans on August 29th 2005 (and subsequent devastating floods), it was determined that a more permanent stop would be needed closer to shorelines so emergency response could take place more effectively. On January 12th 2006, President George W Bush signed into law H.R. 648 which bestowed upon the United States coast guard honorary status with full member privileges within The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). This recognition helped improve cooperation between ICAO members agencies when responding to disasters such as hurricanes Katrina and Rita as well as other emergencies around the world. The U S Customs Service also agreed to provide assistance in CGC operations while they are investigating smuggling activity coming into or leaving America through ports of entry along our southern border

In 1951, both theaters were closed due to fire and reconstruction took place at what is now Highland Park Drive. The first Malibu Civic Auditorium was built in 1953 and served as a venue for concerts and other events until 1984 when it became an indoor ski resort.
