Malibu, California is a small town located on the Malibu Peninsula in Los Angeles County. The population was 12,763 at the 2010 census. The area now known as Malibu was first inhabited by the Tongva people, who lived in the coastal region of Southern California from approximately 2,000 BCE to 950 CE. The Tongva were later absorbed into the native Mexican population. In 1803, when Mexico became a United States territory, the government established a rancho on present-day Malibu Peninsula for Isabella Maria de la Cruz, wife of Don Manuel Nieto. The rancho included what is now Malibu Drive and other areas around it.
