Malibu is a small town located on the Pacific coast of California. The population was 7,500 as of 2010. Malibu is adjacent to Los Angeles and Orange County. The area that now makes up Malibu was originally inhabited by the Tongva people and their successors, the Loyolas. In 1802, following his visit to Southern California, Captain James Cook recorded the name "Maldives" for what is now Malibu Beach on December 29th of that year. In 1803, two years after Cook's visit, Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was founded in what is now downtown LA by Franciscan missionaries. Rancho Santa Fe was acquired by Spanish America in 1827 and then divided among various Mexican families until it passed through ownership by Californians in 1893. In 1911, when new boundaries were drawn for Los Angeles County, Malibu became one of its divisions. The first post office opened at Point Mugu on September 5th of that year. The community grew rapidly due to its location near beaches (including an active breaking surf), easy access to transportation (especially dirt tracks running parallel to the coastline) and attractiveness as a place to live and work in southern California during the days before air travel made it possible for people living inland to commute easily to Los Angeles

Malibu is a small town located on the Malibu coast of California. The town has been inhabited for over two thousand years and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas in Los Angeles County. The first people to live in what is now Malibu were Native Americans who lived on the lower half of present-day Mulholland Drive. In 1803, Spanish missionaries established a mission at Point Muguero, which was then known as Rancho Santa Margarita. The mission was abandoned in 1821 and most likely burned due to Indian attacks. In 1826, Russian fur traders arrived in North America and began trading with the Mexican government. One of these traders, Nikolai Vasilyevich Tschudi, decided to establish a permanent settlement in what is now Malibu. He named the new settlement after himself – "Tschudi's Beach". Tschudi's Beach became the first permanent European Settlement in Southern California. The original town was built on Rancho Santa Margarita land that had been leased from Mexican Governor Manuel Micheltorena by Captain John Dominguez de la Hoz. Dominguez de la Hoz also founded Mission San Buenaventura two miles (3 kilometers) east of modern day Malibu on November 15, 1778 (). TheMission San Buenaventura had three buildings: a priests' residence called La Casa del Pueblo (House of the People), an grammar school called Colegio San Miguel (Church of Saint Michael), and a hospital called Hospital de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores (Hospital of Our Lady of Lourdes). On January 26, 1840, Don Josefina Baca y Quintero donated 5 acres (20 hectares) north of today's Boulevard exit off Interstate 210 to become part of developing Malibu Townsite (). After five years construction began on what would eventually become downtown Malibu." "The townsite site was bounded by Pacific Coast Highway south to where it dips inland below Mulholland Drive; northeast corner by Point Muguerorro Road; northwest corner by Ventura Boulevard; northwest corner by Streeterville Avenue; and east side by Seal Beach Boulevard." After being developed for only 10 years or so during World War II due to its strategic location between Hollywood and Burbank airports as well as its easy access to water resources like Laguna Seca Racetrack race track, much development took place during post-war decades until developer Donald Trump bought up all remaining parcels around 1970 which effectively ended any remaining growth potential for Malibu Townsite." DowntownMalibucity Plaza opened up along with Kustoms Place down the street - this area quickly became known as WestwoodOne mall because many high end stores moved into it during that time such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Neiman Marcus staffer housing
