The Malibu Historical Foundation was founded in 1984 to document and preserve the military community’s deployment gifts to local residents. The foundation has collected more than 4,000 items from the Malibu area military community. The navy gift history in Malibu began with a shipment of recruiting materials on December 1, 1941. More than 1,500 sailors and Marines were sent to Malibu for their training program at NAS Northridge. Included among these troops were two Coast Guard Officers who delivered uniforms and equipment to the newly formed Naval Supply Depot (now known as Naval Air Station Miramar) on Pacific Coast Highway in West Hollywood. In 1948, gifts began being sent by the navy to local civilians living near NAS Northridge. This period is often referred to as “the early years” of naval gift history in Malibu because gifts during this time reflected a much closer relationship between the navy and its civilian constituents. One such donation was a mock-up of an American destroyer which was commissioned into service at NAS Miramar as USS Enterprise (CVN-65). The ship's christening ceremony took place on May 7, 1949; Enterprise became one of only six warships ever named after coastal communities along Southern California's full coastline including Santa Monica Pierhead Point Loma Shores Lagoon north of Dana Point Harbor - one mile off shore from Belleair Beach Resort & Spa located less than three miles south of Old Town Los Angeles County line at Newport Beach CA The most common type of gift given during this time was clothing - socks, T-shirts, underwear and other necessary personal items were often donated by soldiers or marines stationed aboard ships while they underwent their training exercises offshore In 1951 a small boat called "Flamingo" was donated by Commander Harry S Truman Jr., United States Ambassador to Japan It transported food parcels imported by Japanese forces via Long Beach Harbor
