The community of Malibu was founded in the early 1800s by Spanish missions. The area now known as Malibu was first inhabited by Native Americans, who were Hereford and Holstein cattle raisers. In 1802, Captain James Cook discovered what is now Malibu harbor while exploring the East Coast of North America. He named the area "Malibu" after his ship, the "Nieuw Amsterdam." In 1916, Hollywood star Cecil B. DeMille developed a rancho on present-day Mulholland Drive in what is now part of Malibu. DeMille used his resources to help fund Hollywood's first movie industry. By the late 1920s, however, most of DeMille's properties had been turned into tracts of undeveloped land. In 1965 actor Clint Eastwood bought one of DeMille's remaining holdings in Mulholland Drive for $2 million dollars. Over time, Eastwood expanded and improved his property until it became one of Los Angeles' most prestigious neighborhoods. In 1999 he sold his entire stake in Malibu to real estate magnate Steve Ross for $1 billion dollars
