In 1887 their estate was divided into three parcels: one for residence, one for agriculture, and one for public use including a schoolhouse and parkland known as Heineman Park. In 1916 Hollywood studios bought title to all three tracts which then formed part of Hollywood film district that included Culver City, Vinegar Hill/Laguna Beach, Westwood (now Echo Park), Sherman Oaks/Hollywood Hills and North Hollywood. The first sound films were made at Technicolor on these lands in 1917 with pictures being projected onto huge screens using giant metal sheets or "striped negatives". By 1948 all but Cedars-Sinai Hospital were built on Malibu Creek Road between Mulholland Drive and Highland Road with new homes continuing to be built along the creek until it was diverted into Interstate 5 near Point Mugu Airport in 1957
