In that year, an American military post was established in what is now Manhattan Beach, which served as a base for troops during the Mexican-American War. The post also played an important role in the development of Los Angeles. In 1875, Manhattan Beach became part of Orange County and was renamed after New York City's Upper West Side. However, it reverted to its original name in 1907 when it became part of Los Angeles County. The community grew rapidly due to its location near both the ocean and railroad tracks. By 1925, Manhattan Beach had over 1,500 residents and had become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southern California. However, World War II led to increased competition for jobs and housing in postwar Los Angeles. As a result, population growth slowed down significantly in Manhattan Beach over the next few decades. Manhattan Beach is a town in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 4,823 at the 2010 census. It was part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area before it was incorporated as a city in 1964. The name Manhattan Beach is derived from "Mansfield" (now Mansfield Park), a small community on the Pacific coast ofUSA that developed between 1848 and 1860 as a result of waves of Irish immigrants settling there. The first post office at Mansfield was established on July 14, 1851 by Captain John Fenton. In 1865, the town's name was changed to Highland Park when it became an incorporated city. The original inhabitants were primarily Mission Indians who had been brought over by Humboldt Bay Company gold seekers in 1769-1770. They built their first homes along what is now Fourth Street and First Avenue near where Redondo Beach Boulevard now stands; they also farmed land around Point Dume until about 1840 when all Mission Indian property was confiscated by the US government under General Antonio Lopez during the Mexican–American War for expansionist purposes. By 1846, about 50% of Highland Park's population consisted of white Anglo-Saxon settlers from Northern California who had emigrated since Gold Rush days; 30% were Japanese American citizens recruited into military service during World War II; and 10% were Native Americans or other minorities living among whites. In 1850s most residents still spoke only English but some moved to Japanese culture which soon replaced Anglo-Saxon culture within Highland Park society after 1850s when most people transitioned to using modernized English language with no native speakers remaining among them any longer
