Manhattan Beach is a city on the Pacific Coast of Northern California, United States. The population was 22,997 at the 2010 census. It is located in San Diego County. The first Europeans to visit Manhattan Beach were vessel captains sailing from San Francisco to Point Salinas during the 1820s. In 1828, two brothers founded what became known as "Battery Park" on the site of today's Old Town (northwest corner of Broadway and Center). They opened a hotel and store there and named their community after Manhattan, New York City. When California became a state in 1850, Albany, New York decided that its capital should be in San Francisco instead of Albany because it was more centrally located. So when California gained statehood in 1861, Albany re-appointed Buttonwood brother George as its first governor with a mandate to move the capital from San Francisco to Sacramento so that it would be within reach of both political power centers. In 1865, Manhattan Beach residents voted to annex part of Imperial County which included present-day Long Beach and most of Hermosa Beach – choosing this annexation over offers from other towns in Southern California because they saw it as an opportunity for greater commerce opportunities than could be found closer to Los Angeles or Riverside counties. The town had been established primarily as a summer resort destination for wealthy Californians who wanted easy access to the rich marine life off Point Loma (southwest corner of Broadway and State Street) and Monterey Bay (northwest corner of Broadway and First Street). By 1880, however, Manhattan Beach had become an major commercial center with numerous stores along Center Boulevard between First Street and Broadway; several large hotels including The Battery (now called Trump International Hotel), The Parkside Hotel & Spa (now known as Harbor View Resort & Marina), The Regency Inn & Casino & Spa (now known as Redondo Pier Resort), Westchester Place Mall & Casino (), various freewaysRichard Moller Drive - now I-5 South - northward extension into town started forming: Third Avenue NE (), Fourth Avenue NE ()... cloverleaf interchange soon completed with SR 101/I-5 just east side of downtown becoming I-8 instead

Manhattan Beach is a town in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 12,669 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco–Oakland–Hayward Metropolitan Statistical Area. Manhattan Beach borders the Golden Gate National Recreation Area to the east and south, Alameda County to the west and north, and Sausalito County to the northwest. The first permanent Europeans to visit what is now Manhattan Beach were Spanish conquistadors in 1769. They named it Punta de la Cruz because of its high point on an cape that overlooked San Francisco Bay. In 1821, landowner Colonel George Leavenworth donated 8 acres (3 ha) of beachfront property for public use as a resort town called "Manhattan." The town charter was issued on November 25, 1824. On October 1st 1861, during American Civil War era fighting near Fort Mason in Oakland Marina district about 3 miles (4 km) northeast of present-day downtown Manhattan Beach], Ulysses S Grant ordered his forces burned all bridges over San Pablo Bay so as not to impede naval operations against Confederate ships anchored there off El Cerrito Peninsula; this order led General Robert E. Lee to nickname Manhattan Beach "The Bridge at Palo Alto" when he took command of his army's retreating column from here after Battle of Appomattox Court House in 1865 In 1872 developer James Mott founded a paper company which became known as The Times Mirror Company and developed water resources for residential development along with commercial properties including a pier extending into San Francisco Bay Governor Ronald Reagan declared May 15th 1984 as "Manhattan Beach Day" in commemoration of this event On July 11th 2013 Mayor Libby Schaaf announced that they will close down all but one business on Main Street due to budget cuts being made by her office On October 10th 2013 it was announced that Empire State Building would be open for tours once again after having been closed since 2007 due to damage caused by fire
