In 1951, when California became an independent state (it previously belonged to Oregon), Manhattan Beach annexed part of Hermosa beach which made it total land area of 1 square mile (0.6 square km). 7. As result of Amendments No 757 and 827 to Californias Constitution on November 6th 1976 Brooklyn Heights Avenue was annexed into the community from Hermosa beach making it its last annexation until today's separation between Brooklyn Heights Avenue and Hermosa beach proper which is located in Hawthorne Heights Neighborhood
