Manhattan Beach is a small town in Marin County, California, located on the San Francisco Bay. The population was 9,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco–Oakland–Hayward Combined Statistical Area. Manhattan Beach is known for its red sand beaches and white-sand coves which are popular with swimming and sunbathing. The first European settlers to what is now Manhattan Beach were Spanish missionaries who founded Mission Santa Cruz de la Mesa in 1795. In 1836, Alvarado Road was built as a coastal drive from Sausalito to Tiburon and became one of the main roads through Marin County. In 1876, an act of Congress designated Manhattan Beach as a portmanteau of "Manhattan" and "Beach". As early as 1892 there were complaints about deep water seeping into freshwater marshes near the shoreline so that beachgoers had to use pumps to keep their feet wet when they walked or bike along the beaches. In 1895, Mayor John Fenton enacted An Act To Promote Commercial Development within limits of Townships One Hundred Eighteen (1/18th) North and Twenty-One East (21st), Now including portions of Section Two Hundred Thirty-Six (236), Now included in Township One hundred thirty-six North (1/30th) east thereof; And Be it enacted by both Houses of this Legislature That real estate lots situate on sands bordering Seawall Boulevard extend seaward from Point Reyes National Seashore line 1/2 mile beyond said limit seaward generally; So provided all Lots described hereafter shall be deemed Lot No’s I through IV inclusive according to Said boundaries extending seaward from said point 1/2 mile beyond said limit seaward generally: Provided also That no lot shall be sold without first having been approved by Aldermen aforesaid: In 1907, two brothers named Harry Fox bought some land north of Point Reyes National Seashore for $10 per acre and began building a home called The fox house which still stands today on what would later become Third Street between MacArthur Boulevard and Castro Road. They soon added another home on Fourth Street near Quarry Drive which became known as The old fox house. By 1915, Harry Fox had sold all his property except for 2 acres south of Third Street where he built his final home which remains today known as The new fox house. The 1920s saw growing development around Point Reyes Station with several businesses opening up including Butte's Variety Store (now MacDonald's), Marble Palace Deli & Cafe, Joe's Pub & Grill, seafood restaurant Lighthouse Marina Inc., movie theater Regal Cinemas Hollywood Park and more importantly Camp La Brea operations tentatively known then as Lopez Marine View Hotel until World War II when it became Coast Guard Base camp La Brea before becoming Military base Camp Pendleton thereafter Camp Angeles during Korean War periods until being moved back ashore again in 1966 when it closed permanently after serving its purposeties at various locations across Southern California mainland United States Naval Postgraduate School located adjacent thereto since 1951veterans housing barracks complete single family homes numbered between one hundred fifty-six thousand six hundred ninety thousand five hundred eighty three thousand nine hundred seventy seven thousand eight dollars U S dollars

Manhattan Beach was originally part of the original Rancho Verde land grant given to Juan Manuel de Alvarado in 1821. The town began to form in the 1870s when a group of entrepreneurs founded a hotel, store, and school on what is now Fourth Street. In 1881, the city annexed Manhattan Beach and the town became an official city in 1907.
