There is no question that Manhattan Beach, California has a long and distinguished history as an important port and geographic center in Southern California. Manhattan Beach was founded on March 1, 1896 by Richard W. Halsey as a small, unincorporated community on the banks of the Santa Monica River. The town was renamed Manhattan Beach Boulevard in 1926 after Mayor John P. McLaughlin of Los Angeles designated it a "neighborhood berth" for residents of Hollywood Hills. The new central business district was built around Harbor Drive between Post Road (now 14th Street) and Vine Avenue (now Lincoln Boulevard). Several theaters were developed along Vine Avenue including Regal Cinemas (later AMC), Queen Elizabeth II Stadium-Shopping Center, Valley View Mall, Microsoft Theater and Shoreham Amusement Park. In 1978, two adjacent housing developments called Northridge were completed adjacent to Downtown Manhattan Beach with plans to increase retail development in the area while preserving some open space for public use such as a park or beachfront walkway. However these projects never came to fruition because they conflicted with other development projects being undertaken at that time within Downtown Manhattan Beach boundaries which would eventually lead to their demolition. Downtown Manhattan Beach experienced another period of growth starting around 2005 when several large office buildings were completed near Westchester Boulevard which created significant pollution problems due to their emissions from their construction sites; however this trend stoppedaround 2010 when those same buildings began to be replaced by residential units which now form part of what is known as "The Inland Empire." Today Downtown Manhattan Beach remains an active commercial corridor with many businesses located along Broadway between Mulholland Drive/Peyton Place/Lower Sloane Street/Westchester Boulevard/US 101 School District boundaries; butresidential development has displaced much older commercial properties throughout most parts of the neighborhood making it difficult for pedestrians or bicyclists accessdowntown areas without going out onto streets or sidewalks which can become very dangerous at night when traffic is heavy
