Manhattan Beach is a town in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 15,032 at the 2010 census. It is on the Great Western Peninsula of San Diego and is bordered by Encinitas to the north and east, La Mesa to the south, Poway to the west and North Townships of Huntington Beach to the northwest. The first Europeans who landed in what is now Manhattan Beach were Spanish Conquistadors on November 2nd, 1769 when they set up a base camp on Point Loma (the present-day downtown area) for three days before returning home. Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo explored San Diego Bay in 1542 and1543 but no entry has been found for him or his men in this vicinity. In 1814 an adobe rancho was purchased by José Arguelles from Manuel Nieto de la Vega near what is now known as Vista Hermosa Boulevard. On December 14th of that year Arguelles sold Rancho Los Nietos (later part of Rancho Santa Fe), bounded northerly by Harbor Drive on one side and alluvial fans running along El Cuyamaca River on another side back to Point Loma which he had first established in 1769 as his headquarters overlooking Mission Valley; it extended easterly across Harbor Drive into what are now parts of La Mesa and Poway. He also acquired Rancho Rinconada (later part of Rancho Tejon) extending westerly from Point Loma onto Rinconada beach then easterly into Promontory National Monument making it one of only two towns in Southern California with a national monument presence; both properties remain today within city limits despite their remote location In 1854 Isidro Ortiz y Arellano organized a group of Mexican Americans called "El Comité" to resist American annexation during the Mexican–American War because they believed that Mexico would not recognize America's independence if America became a country without Mexico’s consent los Padres had granted citizenship to all Californians regardless of race only Mexicans could hold public office except justices including members of Congress but this policy was abolished following Mexican capture at Bexar County Siege In 1861 Francisco Peralta organized Independent Order Sons Of Mexico after witnessing rioting among Anglo mobs accompanying General Taylor’s march through Tijuana resulting from California joining Texas during The Lone Star Rebellion In 1865 Manuel Antonio Rivera formed Regimiento Mexicano de Guerra commanded by Captain Enrique Martinez consisting mostly recent Californian immigrants recruited through secret societies like Masonic Lodge #2 which operated outposts around Orange County among other activities When Captain Martinez commanding regiment encountered Apache warriors near Bucaramanga Canyon January 8th 1865 he ordered his men not fire upon them since such an action would have resulted in casualties instead they madeadevice signifying surrender with broken swords while being surrounded by hostile Apache warriors under cover of darknessonly one man escaped alive later revealed as Captán Ventura who rode off into the night seeking refuge with local ranger company An early settler was George Hutton who built a cabin near where today's Point Park Avenue stands on October 3rd, 1857 . A second cabin was built about 50 feet away from where store fronts stillexist at 5th Ave., Park Plank Road corner 5th St., just northwest corner along Anacapa Blvd.(now Northwestern US Highway 95). Hutton opened his business there with 3 employees: grocery buyer John Smedley & cashier Hiram Ballard & cook James Witherspoon who cooked meals for passengers aboard steamboats going down Anacapa Blvd.(now Northwestern US Highway 95).
