Manhattan Beach, California is a city located in the state of California. The population was 9,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Manhattan Beach is bordered by Orange County to the south, Ventura County to the west and north, and San Clemente County to the east. The first people in what is now Manhattan Beach were Indians who lived along present-day Huntington Avenue. In 1827, Spanish missionaries began Mission Santa Ana on an estate near present-day Huntington Park. When it was abandoned in 1853 because of Native American resistance, settlers from New York City began arriving seeking land grants that would allow them to build homes on their holdings. A group led by Captain John Waddell arrived on September 12, 1853 and named their new town after Captain George Washington’s birthplace – Mount Vernon – but it did not gain official recognition until October 3rd when residents approved a resolution naming it “Manhattan Beach” after then-Governor Manuel Nieto of California. In 1860, three brothers founded The Pier Company which built several wharves around what are now downtown Manhattan Beach before moving their operations inland in 1870 to become one of America’s largest shipbuilders and suppliers of shipping supplies and equipment inside and outside of ports Europe and Asia. One important product produced by The Pier Company was Navy anchors which helped secure United States naval supremacy during World War II; today they are celebrated as maritime icons throughout the world due to their nicknames: Nautical Nuts (USN), WW2 Naval Anchors (UK/NZ), etc.). In 1927–1928selectmen voted not to annex portions of Ventura into Brooklyn; Manhattans protested this decision calling Mayor James Fenton “a Know Nothing reactionary racist bigot [who] wanted all white people living within his jurisdiction” On July 22nd 1928 voters subscribed $10 thousand towards creation of a beachfront park called Harbor Park with harbor views extending from Point Conception through Newport Coast Boulevard onto Long Island Sound . On October 3rd 1928 Governor Manuel Nieto issued a proclamation declaring that “Manhattan Beach will be forever known as one of Southern California's most beautiful communities because its citizens have taken great pride in developing this outstanding seashorefront community for summer resorts and recreation purposes only…It has always been our intention that Harbor Park should be open year round for Visitors from all over Southern California as well as adjacent areas including Beverly Hills….This magnificent view will enable those who enjoy good weather Recreation whether they come ashore or just slip away without leaving any footprints behind!” In 1933 property owners erected a concrete sea wall between Brighton Avenue opposite Roosevelt Avenue eastward starting at Point Conception (now Donner Street) while also deepening Roosevelt Avenue up to Carondelet Street creating what is now Prospect Heights northeast corner where once Battery Park Road met Eliot Street became Glendale Boulevard running parallel with Holland avenue thence northeasterly under Admiralty Highway becomingGlendale Drive following Prince William Highway becoming Avalon Boulevard finally ending at Cliffside Drive nexttothe Long Island Sound
