The Marine Corps Deployed Gift History in Manhattan Beach, California is a unique and proud tradition that began in 1978. The Marines of the 2d Battalion, 9th Marines Regiment gift history program helps preserve and commemorate the military relationships between our men and women who serve our country. Manhattan Beach is a small town in Southern California. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Pacific Coast and is bordered by San Diego to the north, Orange County to the east, and Seal Beach to the south. The name Manhattan Beach comes from two places; one being "Manhattan" which is an island in Long Island Sound and the other being "Beach" which refers to a section of sand spit that extends into Surf City Channel on Long Island (the beach stretch between Manhattan Beach Boulevard and Gulf Street). The first permanent European settlement in what would become Manhattan Beach was made by John Doheny in 1847. Doheny's landing, called Beacheside Landing after his family's home on Beacheside Road near where it runs today, allowed for commercial fishing activity off of Point Loma until about 1850 when imports began again because of easy access to fresh water from Mexico via canals. In 1858, Doheny sold his land consisting of present-day Downtown Manhattan Beach as well as parts of Seal Beach and Orange County for $1 million to Joshua Hahn who had bought land nearby from Juan Bautista de Anza y Cámpora two years earlier. After years of planning by various civic committees including one chaired by Captain John Sutter who fought at Alamo Heights during Mexican independence War, Hahn built a harbor using dredging equipment he had brought over with him from China while living in Hong Kong. He named it after his benefactor Joshua Harris Hancock who also donated money for improvements including a road along Huntington Avenue which ran through downtown Manhattan Beach before terminating at Adams Boulevard today. Both names remain current even though their original purpose has long passed away: The Harbor became part of San Diego Bay while New York Harbor became part of Brooklyn/ Queens Harbour within New York City limits. A post office opened at what is now Downtown Manhattan Beach on May 26th, 1892 under the name Beacheside Cove Post Office due to its close proximity to Mrs. Anna Jaffe's house (now known as Mrs MacArthur House). The first mail was received there on June 1st with an order from San Francisco asking for subscriptions for American Monthly magazine sent out weekly during those days! In 1916 both service buildings were destroyed by fire but quickly rebuilt with new glass walls and interior doors thanks largely to donations from local businesses owners Alfred Taussig Jr., Julius Rosenwald Sr., Harry Sperandeo and DonatellO Salvatore Ferragamo among others... A year later a second building was added west of First Street next door (later renamed Third Street) and served concurrently until 1951 when all UPNumeric mail moved inland due to security concerns following World War II... A third building (later Fourth Street) replaced it directly north next door starting July 6th 1951... Service discontinued permanently on May 30th 1974 dueS USPS reorganization resulting in discontinuation or consolidation several post offices around Southern California including this one making it one of last few remaining post offices open statewide still serving email communications today! In 1975-1976 another grant enabled conversion/ enlargement of old storage warehouse onto site currently housing Fourth Street Light Rail Station - now America’s oldest light rail station north side waterfront

Manhattan Beach is a small town on the eastern coast of California, located in Orange County. The name Manhattan Beach was given to the community by millionaire real estate developer William T. Sherman in 1922. The population was 2,500 at the 2000 census. The first people inhabiting what is now Manhattan Beach were Native Americans who lived along the southern shore of Long Island Sound and may have come from what is now Rhode Island or Block Island. In 1664, Englishman John Smith landed at Staten Island and named it after his hometown of Manchester, England. By 1785, all Native American occupancy had ended as European settlement began expanding into North America. In 1824, Russian sailor Dmitry Novgorodtsev settled on Long Point Peninsula in present-day Manhattan Beach and named it Nauka (New Harbor). He built a cabin there that still stands today. In 1826, British fur trader James Wright established himself at Shelter Cove on Shelter Island and bought land around present-day Santa Ana beach for $2 per acre (the equivalent of about $110 today). When he died in 1837, his wife inherited part of his land which she sold to Augustus Willard Beecher in 1840 for $6000 dollars ($7 million adjusted current value). In 1845, two brothers named Edward Barnard purchased some adjacent property from Mrs Beecher for $8000 dollars ($10 million adjusted current value). They soon renamed their purchase "Beach Haven." In1850s another brother by the same name bought more land nearby including present day Donner Avenue and developed it into an exclusive residential area known as "Manhattan Beach Heights." On July 4th 1870 commissioners Adam Clayton Powell Jr., John Quincy Adams Sr., and others attended a picnic near Donner Pass where they proposed renaming the entire peninsula after Ulysses S Grant - something that would later become reality with General Grant's namesake borough being established in 1886 as San Francisco Bay Area became politically central following California gold Rush settlements such as Fillmore and Sutro City north of San Francisco Bay Bridge
The first settlement on Manhattan Beach was made in 1847 by Spanish immigrants. The town was named for the Dutch city of Amsterdam, which had been their original destination. In 1860, the town was merged with Hermosa Beach to form an incorporated municipality. The town's population reached 10,000 in 1920 and 100,000 in 1940.
