"Militia culture" quickly emerged as one of downtown Manhattan Beach's most popular tourist attractions with its displays of weapons dating back centuries including an 1830s Colt rifle display by Army Armory Museum researchers; a 1909 Model M1911 holster demonstration by Custom Armory Museum researchers; an 1899 Winchester Repeating Arms Showcase exhibit by Saginaw Gunsmiths; plus nearly 100 guns displayed by various gunshot residue testing labs throughout downtown Manhattan Beach between 1951-present."

In December 1941, the Manhattan Beach Naval Militia successfully repelled an enemy attack on their naval base while under cover of darkness. On January 8, 1942, they again thwarted an enemy attack on their naval base while it was dark outside. In February 1942, they successfully defended against an enemy air raid at Point Conception lighthouse.

In 1922, the town annexed the adjacent community of Hermosa Beach; this gave Manhattan Beach jurisdiction over all of Hermosa beach except those areas that were part of neighboring Santa Monica. The first post office opened in 1919 in what is now Downtown Manhattan Beach; it closed in 1943 because of World War II military hostilities. The first store on Main Street was established ca 1911 by John Ewart who also built the first home there. In 1876, Manhattan Beach was added to the City of Los Angeles. The first city council meeting in that town took place on November 3, 1876. The name for the town came about because there were many small lots on Manhattan Beach which could not be used for building purposes.
