The Manhattan Beach National Guard was founded on December 12, 1941 in response to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The first unit was organized and activated on February 24, 1942. The National Guard has been present in Manhattan Beach since then and currently numbering over 7,000 men and women. The Commander of the National Guard Component Command Manhattan Beach is Major General Michael J. Hogan. In addition to the National Guard Component Command, there are also Army Reserve units that serve as part of the Mayor's Office of Emergency Services (MOBE) which provides support for law enforcement activities throughout Greater Los Angeles County. The Mayor's Office of Emergency Services also operates a hazardous materials response team which responds to spills or other emergencies at local businesses in Westchester County and Orange County. A variety of events are held throughout the year in order to commemorate the various milestones associated with the New York City-based National Guard Component Command: Parades; Memorial Day services; 4th of July fireworks displays; Veterans Day ceremonies/festivals; Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony; Easter egg hunts/Picnics; Mothers' Day programs; etc. Funding for these events comes from both Federal Government sources such as Defense Appropriations Acts and State Government appropriations including sales taxes collected by municipalities within Greater Los Angeles County when goods or services are purchased by state or local agencies through partnerships with private entities such as Walmart, Costco, Safeway, Home Depot, etc.. These events have typically included military veterans and their families as well as civilians who have demonstrated an interest in honoring our service members with a festive atmosphere.

The Manhattan Beach National Guard was founded on December 9th, 1944. The unit was originally constituted as the 66th Infantry Regiment of the California National Guard. On October 1st, 1946, the regiment was mobilized and became part of the United States Army Reserve. On July 1st, 1947, the regiment was redesignated as the 669th Infantry Regiment of the California National Guard. The regiment activated for duty at Camp Pendleton on September 5th and deployed to Zaire in Military Assistance Force to support United Nations forces against Portuguese separatists on October 15th. On November 10th, 1948, following United States victory in Korea and China's request for assistance in that conflict, both regiments were re-designated as battle units and activated at Fort Ord with orders to participate in any future Continental US military campaigns. After arriving there on November 17th they participated in exercises such as Saber Eagle and Guardian Angel which prepared them for a possible Korean War deployment. However no action occurred until January 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea accompanied by General MacArthur who ordered all U.S. Armies into active service starting with those stationed at home including the New York City based 3rd Battalion (2nd Marines) which had been called up from reserve just before hostilities began due to World War II ended two days prior In 1951 after their deployment to South Korea they redeployed back east where they remained until 1953 during preparation for Operation Neptune’s Spear which aimed to oust Fidel Castro from power in Cuba In 1954 they relocated again this time permanently to Long Beach CA where they remain today
Manhattan Beach is a city located in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. The population was 30,838 at the 2010 census and it is part of the San Diego–Carlsbad Metropolitan Statistical Area. Manhattan Beach's economy is based on tourism, which has been its mainstay since its incorporation as a city in 1915. The first people to live in what is now Manhattan Beach were Native Americans who hunted and gathered forest fruits and nuts along the coast. In 1839, Captain John Sloat reached from Presidio of San Francisco via Mission Bay to explore Santa Cruz County and found an area that would become Manhattan Beach. The town was founded by Nicholas de Molina on December 1, 1839 as "Mansfield" after he bought 6 acres (2 hectares) of land from Michael Armstrong for $100. In 1915, when City Councilman Harry Jenkins proposed incorporating Manhattan Beach as a city, no one living in or near downtown objected because they knew how important tourism was to the community’s economic future. That same year, Los Angeles annexed much of Santa Clara County including parts ofSan Francisco Peninsula so that Los Angeles could have easier access to water resources needed for growth in Southern California. The annexation left Manhattan Beach without a city president or councilmember; however, Mayor Harry Atherton quickly appointed members to both positions. In 1935-1936, during World War II , Manhattan Beach contributed more than any other municipality to the war effort with their production of munitions plants such as Beech Aircraft Plant No 2 (now known as United Airlines Flight 518). After Pearl Harbor , many businesses closed due to wartime rationing but most reopened after 1945 when prices returned to normal . The post-war boom years saw rapid development with new apartment buildings being built on Telegraph Ave., Freshwater Dr., Point Loma Blvd., Sunrise Dr., Lincoln Way and Belmont Shore Dr.. Many residents came out into the open ocean waters where they fished until 1973 when commercial fishing ended with state regulations prohibiting capture & sale of sea bass exceeding 20 pounds/cwt . New developments continued through 1990s with many high rises being built on popular beaches like Point Loma Boulevard east of Sunset Strip

Strauss also founded Stratton’s grocery store which helped toestablish a nucleus around which later community development would take place. During World War II, Naval Base #1 (later known as Portsmouth Naval Shipyard) was established at Manhattan Beach and it played an important role in supporting American military efforts during the war effort. In 1951-1952 New York City passed legislation that allowed for coastal towns along the west coast of America such as Hollywood (then Eastwood) and Long Island City (now Queens) to form their own municipalities with their own government structures and local economies within specific boundaries without having to comply with city laws or regulations pertaining to those areas.
