It straddles the border of both counties and is bordered by Imperial Beach on the south, Pacific Beach on the north, and Carlsbad and Rancho Santa Fe Springs on the east. The first people to live in what is now Manhattan Beach were Native American hunter-gatherers who traveled along what are now Interstate 5, State Route 101 and US 101 during pre-historic times. The area now known as Manhattan Beach was developed after World War II by military personnel stationed at nearby Naval Air Station Miramar. In 1949, it became an incorporated town under state law. During its early years, Manhattan Beach was known for its surfing beaches which can be seen from many parts of town. These days however, much of the town's notoriety comes from its annual commercial fishing tournaments which attract hundreds of spectators each year to various locales around False Creek seawall including Point Loma and South Park areas near downtown San Diego. Manhattan Beach, California is a town in San Diego County, California. The population was 8,491 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Carlsbad–San Marcos Metropolitan Statistical Area. Manhattan Beach's namesake and founder, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, lived there from 1859 to 1865. In 1915 the town became one of the cities in San Diego County when it was annexed by the county. The first people inhabiting what is now Manhattan Beach were Native American fishermen who used what is now Point Loma as their landing ground for fishing trips from ships anchored offshore. The first Europeans to visit Manhattan Beach were Spanish soldiers who landed on December 29th, 1769 during Captain Juan Rodríguez de Menchaca's search for a passage to Mexico City through Santa Cruz Island. In 1859 Augustus Saint-Gaudens bought land at present day corner of Broadway and La Jolla Drive in what is now downtown Manhattan Beach and began construction on his home which he named "Belle Isle". He managed his own business until 1865 when he sold Belle Isle to A.P. Beardsley Jr., developer of Belmont Park in Los Angeles County and father of actor/director Cecil B DeMille Sr.. In 1915, after annexation by San Diego County, New York City Mayor George Norris announced that San Diego would be its new county seat with plans for a city hall and streetscape modeled after New York City's Fifth Avenue and Broadway financial district (now Midtown Brooklyn). However, Norris' proposal met stiff resistance from many leaders in the city including then-mayor James Hahn who lobbied successfully against annexing Manhattan Beach because he felt it would deprive him of potential voters in neighboring Qualcomm whom he coveted as constituents;Qualcomm currently forms part of Downtown San Diego neighborhoods such as Coronado Heights and Little Italy within close proximity to both Original Mission Bayou Mission District Historical Park located just north of point where 5th Ave meets Broadway) . On November 3rd 1913 groundbreaking occurred for Central High School serving students from Manhatten Beach up until 1938 when enrollment totaled over 2,000 students with additional buildings erected over the years including an auxiliary gymnasium (1929), art school (1936), science center (1945), athletic field house (1948), library (1972) housing projects built between 1960-1966 onshore adjacent to Navellier Lagoon which served as open water training area for Navy SEALs during Operation Neptune Spear One interesting footnote about this time period is that while much development took place within MOB; little residential housing actually resulted due largely to restrictive covenants placed upon developments along US Highway 101W shortly thereafter banning buildups more than 25 feet high or “other startling features” like metal detectors at entrances which led some homeowners into purchasing their properties only to have them torn down following prohibition enforcement campaigns waged by local police officers working closely with state Alcohol Control Authority officials . With few exceptions these events generated little headlines outside of local media circles save perhaps for occasional reports about law enforcement activities near popular beaches throughout Southern California but not so much anywhere else . After World War II policies changed dramatically resulting in vast suburban sprawl across most major coastal communities including those situated immediately adjacent to points where Interstate 5 crossed certain waterways creating_____________________________________________ opportunity for developers eager to capitalize on artificial waterfront areas complete with airconditioned shopping malls etc.; however not so much heremeaningmanhattan beach remained largely undisturbed aside from sporadic vandalism incidents occasionaly affecting homes bordering busy highways
