They named their business Starbucks after then-Seattle Mayor Ronald Reagan's favorite word: "starts." The first Starbucks location opened up in Seattle's Pioneer Square on July 17, 1992. At first, they only sold potable water and soft drinks; however, they soon added espresso drinks and lattes. In 1997, they started selling pre-packaged foods such as sandwiches, salads, muffins and cookies; however this venture failed quickly due to low demand from customers. In 2001, they opened their first international store in Jakarta Indonesia; however this store also failed quickly due to low demand from customers. In 2003, Starbucks introduced its famous doubleshot system which allowed customers to order two different items (e.g., an espresso with milk or latte) either side of each other on the same plate rather than having them separate as is customary with other chains such as Dunkin' Donuts or McDonalds. This innovation helped increase sales by 20%. This new concept caught on so much that eventually all stores began offering doubleshots starting in 2006! However this idea unfortunately didn't last long because many people found it difficult to get two different items on the same plate without having them separate again! In 2007, Schultz announced that he would be stepping down from his role at Starbucks but will continue providing support through his ownership stake in Intuit Incorporated which owns Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Ltd., one of largest hotel chains in the world (the merged company combined assets of Marriott International Inc., Travelers Group plc., Wyndham Hotels Corporation et al.). With Schultz no longer leading or owning any direct shares within Starbucks Corporation there has been speculation amongst some quarters about what could happen next with regards to product development/launches etc... Some have speculated that Schultz may sell off some shares himself whilst others believe he might retire altogether completely at some point during his tenure at Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Ltd.?
