Manteca is located in the Central Valley of California, about 120 miles east of Sacramento. The name Manteca means "place where the trees grow." In 1847, James Fenton erected a small post office at what is now the corner of Third and Market streets. The first store on Third Street was called Fenton's Emporium, and it served as the town's only business until 1854 when a gristmill was built on Second Street. In 1855, J.Fenton & Sons ran a stagecoach stop from Manteca to Atascadero. In 1857, John Sutter discovered oil in Manteca and began producing gas in 1863. By 1865, there were over 100 businesses in Manteca with 5500 residents. In 1868 Gassaway started making wagons for carrying goods to San Francisco; he soon became an important factor in the community's economic development. A sawmill opened up near Antelope Creek in 1870 and remained operational until 1915; it was one of the earliest mills to use power equipment. The mill also shipped flour and other products from Manteca to San Francisco via railroads beginning in 1880s. In 1903-1904 Elisha Stout developed an oil refinery that became one of America's leading producers of gasoline and diesel fuel; it continued production into the 21st century. During World War II, Manteca played an important role as both a manufacturing center for munitions and as a storage depot for food supplies transported by military trains from Los Angeles County into Northern California (blowing up locomotives bringing these supplies). He former two high schools were closed down during this time: Stonington High School which closed its doors on October 15th 1945 after 28 years operation followed by Vanden Hove High School which closed its doors on February 3rd 1949 after 5 years operations
Manteca was founded in 1849 by the Hollywood goldsmith Hiram G. Howe. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Manteca River, which provided easy access to gold and silver mines in California. By 1861, Manteca had a population of over 100 people. In 1862, the town became part of Kern County and retains that designation to this day. In 1865, Manteca became the capital of Kern County and hosted a number of important events including the first county courthouse meeting. The following year, it was renamed after General Ulysses S. Grant because he had donated land for its construction. The city's growth continued during the 1870s and 1880s asrapidly replaced mined resources with cotton farming as its primary industry. During World War II, Manteca played an important role in providing food for troops stationed in California and elsewhere in the country. In 1945, it was designated as a National Historical Landmark by President Harry Truman and remains so today.
