The Manteca Army Base was established in 1916 as a small arms depot. The base became an armory in 1941 and eventually grew to serve as the largest military installation in the Central Valley. In 1960, the Manteca Army Base was transferred to the United States Air Force and renamed Davis-Monthan AFB. The base served as an airbase for the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and also played a major role during America's Vietnam War by housing fighter jets during Operation Rolling Thunder and providing logistical support for ground forces. In 1992, Davis-Monthan AFB was transferred back to the United StatesArmy, becoming Fort Warren Army Base.
Manteca, California is a small city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Manteca is located on the eastern border of Kern County and the western edge of Butte County. Manteca is one of the most significant economic centers in Kern County and it has been proclaimed a heritage-based community by the City Council. Manteca was founded in 1853 as a stagecoach stop on Stagecoach Road between Bakersfield and Yuma. In 1872, a post office called "Manteca" was established in Manteca by Samuel Hays with general store and flour mill assets. On July 15, 1907, Manteca incorporated as a city under the name "Manteca". The first mayor of Manteca was A.L. Beattie (1907-1910). The city's growth accelerated during World War II when it became an important center for munitions production and transportation due to its location near major military installations such as Doheny Air Force Base and Palmdale Army Depot. After the war ended, industry declined but Manteca continued to grow as an appellate court seat for Kern County; businesses have since relocated to nearby cities such as Bakersfield or Lancaster because of lower property taxes in Manteca than those found elsewhere in Kern County. Manteca has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 500 years and it was called KSEE by the United States Geological Survey until 1912 when it became Manteca Creek. In 1868, John Sutter discovered gold in what would become Manteca and he named the area Manteca Creek after his discovery. The first post office was established in 1876, and the first store opened in 1878. By 1900, there were six businesses in Manteca with a total population of 1,500. The post office moved to its current location on Main Street in 1908. The two largest industries in Manteca during this time were agriculture and manufacturing; both continue to play an important role today. Manufacturing included several companies that produced agricultural equipment such as Threshers Equipment Company and Rube Goldberg's Potato Masher Company; while agriculture included several large farmers who grew crops such as George Wirzfeld and Luther Rice Sr.; both had significant impacts on local society during this time period. In 1940, World War II began and many businesses closed due to wartime rationing; however, some continued operations until 1945 including First National Bank which reopened after the war with new business procedures and a larger staffs following V-E Day celebrations which took place at Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel near Pershing Square park across from City Hall). In 1952, ranchersville annexed into Manteca making it one municipality within Kern County but there remains a strong connection between these two communities with many residents maintaining ties to their rural roots even though they live within city limits today. Manteca, California was founded by the Spanish in 1821. The first permanent European settlers were Mexicans who arrived in 1836. In 1849, the United States acquired Rancho San Antonio de la Manteca from Mexico and it became part of the Rancho La Paloma empire of a group of American land barons. La Paloma's holdings extended into what is now Fresno County and included much of what is now Manteca. In 1862, after Mexican general Victoriano Huerta defeated Ulysses S. Grant's forces at Bexar Heights, General Huerta ordered his troops to occupy all of central California except for Manteca and Los Angeles. For more than a decade, no one attempted to gain control over the small town because its importance lay with ranching operations on either side of the Central Valley. In 1905, local citizens formed a Citizens' Committee to secure water rights for their town and began to petition for annexation by Manteca as part of what would become known as the "Manteca Water compact." Despite strong opposition from both sides of politics (Ranch owners wanted water delivered directly to their properties while city officials argued that annexation would lead to increased taxes), voters ratified an agreement on November 4th, 1905 which granted Manteca full Cityhood and incorporation as a municipal corporation with powers equal to those of any other city in the state. As an annexe city, Manteca quickly grew into one of southern California's most vibrant communities – home to businesses such as Adobe Photographics Company and Lumberyards & Lumber Co., banks like First National Bank and State Bank (later Jardine Commerce) – as well as various civic organizations such as becoming membershipsin both the Chamber Of Commerce and the Municipal Association; being instrumental in developing downtown Manteca into one of Southern California's most lively commercial districts;and playing host during prohibition years(1937-1946)to several large parties including Governor Frank Capone's visit; becoming involved politically early on in many key statewide battles during World War IIincluding leading efforts resulting in passage nationallyof legislation establishing military training areas west Of Torrance especially around Canoga Park ; hosting numerous events related thereto during this time including The Hollywood Bowl Veterans Day Paradeand others - culminating with Mayor John Fenton staging a grand parade through downtown on Memorial Day weekendin 1941 paying homageto departed mayor Harry Elmer Welch
