Manteca, California is home to the Manteca Coast Guard Station. The station was founded in 1913 as a response to the Spanish-American War. It was originally located on the eastern coast of Santa Barbara County and was moved to its current location in 1971. The Coast Guard has been providing assistance for citizens of Manteca since 1917. In that year, a group of men from Manteca used their ingenuity and perseverance to build a lighthouse on Point Conception. The lighthouse operated until 1951 when it was replaced by a more modern structure. In 1957, a new station was built at State Beach which served as the primary military base for Manteca County until 1979 when it became exclusively civilian property. Today, the Coast Guard Station provides services such as search and rescue, marine environmental protection, law enforcement, and public safety. In addition to its traditional functions, the station also offers exhibits related to maritime history and culture as well as educational programs about life on land and at sea.

From providing aid during typhoons to patrolling the ports, the Coast Guard has always been there for those who need them most. One of their most famous gifts was the first Coast Guard cutter, USCGC Constitution. This ship was donated to the Coast Guard by John D. Rockefeller in 1941 and served as their primary patrol vessel until 1971 when they replaced it with MCGUIRE III. The Constitution also played an important role in Operation Neptune’s Spear which disrupted a terrorist plot against New England in 1990. Today, there are many different types of Coast Guards cutters serving with different missions around the country (including both maritime and marine). However, one of the most unique vessels ever donated to the Coast Guard was GCG-1011H “Alaska” which arrived in February 2019. This boat is specifically designed for icebreaking operations and can be used both inshore and offshore. It is also one of only a few boats equipped with a helicopter landing pad so that helicopters can be used for search and rescue operations or additional law enforcement duties onshore or offshore. It is clear that Gulf County Coastal Community Foundation has enjoyed having these boats parked outside our port every chance we get! We hope that this continued support will keep our coast safe while we work hard to promote responsible fishing and protect ourunique environment!
