Manteca, California is located in the Kern County region of southern California. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. Manteca is a small city surrounded by rural areas and agricultural properties. The first Europeans to come to Manteca were Mission Indians who arrived in 1797. The town was founded on a rancho that had been given to José Narváez by Governor Manuel Nieto in 1836. The town was named for José Francisco de la Calzada y Gómez, 1st Viscount of La Calzada who died in 1837. In 1881, the United States acquired portions of Mexico and made it a territory known as Alta California. The area now comprising Kern County was part of this new district. In 1912, the name of Manteca was changed from San Bernardino to Kern County when it became an official county seat. Manteca is located at (33°10′39″N 118°48′59″W). It has an elevation of 605 feet (183 m). According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Manteca has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csb" on climate maps.
Manteca is a small town located in the central valley of California. The name comes from the Native American word "manātēc", meaning "muddy water" or "riverbank". The first European to visit Manteca was Juan Rodriguez de Alvarado, who explored the Valley of Los Angeles in 1542. In 1821, Rancho San Miguel de Atascadero was patented to José Maria Emeterio Castilla y León. In 1846, one year after California became part of the United States, Manteca's post office was established. The population growth that came with new settlers and industry led to displacement of the local Indian population in the early 20th century. The first known white person living in Manteca was Hosea Coleman in 1905. He started a grocery store and did some farming before moving into business as a contractor. By 1920, Coleman had organized what would become known as the Chamber of Commerce and Development (later renamed the Manteca Civic Association). In 1932, he donated land for an agricultural college which would later be named University at Manteca. Coleman also founded what is now called Centennial Park on this site. A few years later, he donated $10 million towards construction of what is now City Hall; this donation remains one of Manteca's most famous landmarks today. During World War II, much of downtown Manteca was destroyed by bombing raids from Japan; however, much survived including structures such as City Hall and Centennial Park. After the war ended and property values fell off due to recessionary influences, many businesses closed down and downtown became more rundown than it once had been thanks to various city funds being put towards redevelopment projects instead of keeping Downtown open for residential use only - something which still affects parts of town today despite efforts by Mayor John Moorhead to reverse course In 1984-1985, voters passed Measure T which allowed direct funding for infrastructure projects within city limits; this initiative helped revive downtown areas within Manteca following several decades during which they had been abandoned or neglectful by elected officials Manteca has since seen significant gentrification with increasing commercial activity along Broadway Street (formerly Main Street) between State Route 14 and I-5 . Recently there has been interest in restoring older buildings along this stretch such as City Hallblock - also home toCentennial Park- back into use again after years languishing neglected
