In 1859 John Sutter discovered gold near where Manti Creek flows into the river and began mining operations here; however, it didn’t become an important gold mine until 1865 when James Humble developed a hydraulicPF mill here that processed 50% of all mantecas (wheat flour) imported into California In 1886 Honeywell started producing oil wells at Anza Field; however these wells were shut down due to high water levels caused by droughts throughout Southern California during this period In 1919 Willard Mullen built an air plant on a piece of land he had purchased west of town which provided power for lights along Highway 1 A post office called "Manteca" was established in 1887 under statehood by Republican Party candidate George Hearn It moved to its current location on Morse Avenue in 1907 Read & Weller Hardware opened here in 1915 . A large cotton gin operated here from 1917 until 1922 Local businesses included: Ralston Bros., Watchman's Store, Baker's Grocery Co., Drury Drug store

The first Europeans to visit Manteca were Mexican soldiers who followed the Gold Rush in 1848-49 and discovered gold near the present day town site. The discovery led to development of the community with many entrepreneurs starting businesses in what was then a wild frontier area filled with Native Americans, bandits, andStagecoaches Maximum Western Pacific Railroad passengers travelling between Sacramento and Tehachapi Counties on their way to San Francisco Bay. In 1862, Manteca became part of the newly created United States territory of Nevada when that territory was split from California. The city's name comes from Spanish Mission Santa Rita de los Padres which had been founded in 1777 by Father Junípero Serra within sight of Manteca Creek where he built his rancho (farm). During World War II, Manteca played an important role as a plutonium production plant for Los Alamos National Laboratory; its workforce included some Of America’s most skilled nuclear engineers including Jack Kilby who designed America’s first reactor – Three Mile Island – and Myron Ebell who helped develop America’s first atomic bomb. After the war ended, maintenance work began on nearby Hanford Naval Shipyard which would produce plutonium for nuclear weapons until it closed in 1957.
