Manteca is a small town in the Central Valley of California, located just east of Sacramento. It is one of the flattest towns in California and has a population of about 25,000. The Manteca Creek flows through the town and provides irrigation for many crops. The Manteca Post Office was established on November 1, 1849, and continues to serve the community today. The first European to visit Manteca was Captain Juan Bautista de Anza on October 29, 1769. He named it after his friend Diego Gutierrez y Arellano who had accompanied him on his exploration of what is now central California. In 1838, Antonio López y Quiñones found gold at Manteca creek which led to the development of this area as a mining center. Mining started in earnest in 1860 when John Sutter discovered an average yield of over $50 per ton from silver claims at Crystal City creek near present-day Manteca. Many people came to Manteca during this time including George Hearn who built both the first permanent post office here and its first store in 1861 and later became mayoralty candidate here in 1867; Atherton Peralta who served as district attorney from 1865 until 1870; Alvaro Ramos who founded Río Arroyo Brewery in 1870; Asa Gray who ran a general store here from 1876 until 1886; José de la Torre y Cámpora who developed a watermelon orchard here from 1888 until 1912; Lorenzo Lamas who began marketing Grade A apples here beginning in 1914 and continued production until his death in 1978; Manuel García Márquez whose novel One Hundred Years of Solitude was published following their visit to Mantea

Manteca, California is a small rural town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,636 at the 2010 census. Manteca is located on the west bank of the Manteca River adjacent to San Joaquin Valley and Rancheria Indian Reservation. The first Europeans to enter what is now Kern County were Spanish Missionaries in 1769. In 1821, Rancho Santa Fe Mexican land grants were given to Juan Bautista Alvarado and Antonio Maria Moraga. On November 15, 1846, during the Mexican-American War, General José Joaquín Cortés surrendered Manteca to Ulysses S. Grant at this location (then known as Rancho La Cosa). In 1907 Manteca was incorporated as a city by an act of the state legislature; it was reincorporated as a city on December 14th of that year by an act of the same legislature over its objection of a proposed merger with fellow city Pleasanton. The merged cities had no common services or police department and their respective mayors continued to operate separate departments until 1945 when they were consolidated into one municipal government under Mayor John Ladds’ leadership. On October 6th, 1909 fire destroyed most of downtown Manteca which never reopened despite $2 million spent on rebuilding efforts including plans for Anschutz Park where today’s CenturyLink Center stands. The failure doomed both cities because without downtown business there could be no tax base from whichto generate necessary funds for public works projects such as post-fire reconstruction attempts that have successfully resumed Downtown Manteca since then–an example of how well early 20th century planning can work when done right by municipalities subject to strong private sector ownership/operation
