Manteca, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 5,579 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Manteca–Aguadalupe City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first coffee crop was grown in Manteca in 1867 by José Joaquín Elías Romero and his partner Felipe Guerra. They bought some land from Juan Miguel Ortiz and started to grow coffee. A mill was built soon after, and beans were ground for sale. In 1895, Russian immigrants Igor Kochetkov and Dmitriy Semenov founded a business called "Kochev + Semenov" to export Russian-made coffee from Manteca into North America. This company became the largest importer of Italian espresso beans in North America and exported over 2 million pounds of Italian espresso beans between 1895 and 1912. By 1913, Kochev + Semenov had merged with another Russian-owned company, "Igor Kochetkov & Sons", to form "Kochev Coffee & Mills". In 1916, this company began production of French Press coffees under the name "Coffee France". In 1928, Alfred Peet began marketing his own brand of coffee under the name "Peet's Coffee". He moved his factory from Milpitas to Manteca in 1929 to produce more than 1 million pounds of coffee per year. Asanta Coffee Corporation (later known as Starbucks) opened its doors on December 17th 1984 in what would be its first brick-and-mortar store outside Seattle, Washington; it would become one of the world's most popular cafes with over sixteen thousand locations worldwide by 2018 according to World Footprint Database . Asanta Coffee Corporation owned both Starbucks and Peet's Coffee until January 7th 2019 when they were sold back to Asanta Coffee Corporation shareholders through an all-cash deal valued at $2 billion . Manteca was founded in 1881 by Midwesterners who came to Southern California looking for land to ranch and build homes. In 1915, Manteca merged with neighboring Tulare and Pajaro Valleys towns to form one city. Manteca's economy depends on agriculture and natural resources such as watermelons, grapes, nuts, and fruit trees. Manufacturing has declined since the 1990s but there are still some businesses in Manteca that provide jobs for local residents. The Manteca Archeological Society preserves the history of Manteca by excavating old buildings and artifacts from around the town center. Low commodity prices led directly to increased production but also led farmers into debt problems; when prices reverted back below costs associated with early subsidized levels rationing ensued resulting in mass starvation among rural population

Manteca has been inhabited by Native Americans for over five hundred years and is now one of the most developed communities in Kern County. With a variety of industries and businesses, Manteca has become known for its strengths in technology and innovation. In recent years, the community has seen growth in its nightlife and cultural activity. The first residents to live in what is now Manteca were the Ohlone people who arrived circa 1820. By 1860, the Mexican land grant Rancho Diablo had been given to José Joaquín Cámpora and his wife María Elena Carrillo. Between 1881-1892, Rancho Diablo was sold to Lorenzo de Bonilla y Costello who built a hacienda at nearby Sinaloa Street on an area that would later be known as Angelus Heights. In 1892, Anthony Jablonski founded the San Francisco Gas Light Company with his brother-in-law Nicholas Regalado. The company used natural gas to light up San Francisco's streets during this time period and helped spur development around the city center which included developing areas such as Nob Hill and Mission Bay. In 1920s, Manteca became home to Warren Hargrave who ran several successful companies including Wernham Hogg Paper Company (now Wernham Hogg Paper & Packaging) and Bakelite Corporation (now Accurate Parts). As business grew more complex he moved into larger office buildings until his death from leukemia at age 53 in 1984 leaving behind a legacy of success for his family members across many industries throughout their lives together! During World War II much of Manteca was destroyed due to bombing raids by USAAF bombers but after 1945 it began to rebound with various businesses coming back including Atchison Topeka Chemical Corporation which manufactured chemicals for agriculture production before moving downstream into other markets while also creating jobs within local communities throughout southwestern California; Stryker Motors Manufacturing Inc., which manufactured armored vehicles during both world wars before becoming one of America's largest truck manufacturers; Global Foods Inc., which opened its first store outside of North America in Manteca; along with numerous others that have left their mark on this sleepy corner of Kern County!
