Manteca is located on the west bank of the San Joaquin River and is part of the Stockton-San Joaquin Valley metropolitan area. It began as a mission founded in 1847 by Father Francisco Moreno and his brother José de la Torre, both of Spanish descent. The Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded about two miles (3 km) south of Manteca on October 17, 1847 by Arsenio Conde and Diego Rivera. In 1852, General Antonio López y Costilla relieved Father Moreno of his duties as pastor of the mission and granted Rancho Santiago to him. The post office at Manteca was established in 1855, and incorporated as an independent municipality in 1895. The first mayor was Lorenzo Jardine.
