During Neptune’s Spear, waves of Japanese soldiers invaded Northern California; however, despite heavy opposition from American forces, they were able to successful attack several key points within less than two weeks. In Overland Blitz, USMPA members patrolled highways throughout California looking for Axis soldiers who had escaped into Mexico City or elsewhere on our war-time battlefields. They also worked to prevent looting and destruction across Los Angeles County during this time period. Manteca, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is located about 20 miles east of Sacramento and about 25 miles south of Modesto. Manteca is part of the San Joaquin Valley region. The first European to visit Manteca was Antonio López de Portolà in 1769. The town was founded by Juan Bautista de Anza on November 8, 1828, as a result of fur trade with Native Americans. In 1851, it became part of Stockton when that city was formed from parts of two other towns: Manteca and Gridley. On May 10, 1857, Manteca incorporated as a city under the name Stockton. It reverted back to its original name on October 16, 1957. Manteca has been a center for agriculture since before Spanish settlers arrived in 1775. Ranching and farming were early among Mantecans' primary activities; cattle ranching remains one of the most important aspects of their economy today. Cotton production also began to take hold in the early 19th century; until World War II Manteca's output accounted for 50% of all cotton grown in Contra Costa County outside Sacramento County . Manteca, California is a small community in San Joaquin County, California. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is located about 41 miles (70 kilometers) east of Sacramento and 25 miles (40 kilometers) north of Livermore. Manteca was founded by prospectors in 1853 as an agricultural center on theranch of Rancho Bernardo de las Palmas. In 1875, it became the terminus for the Southern Pacific Railroad's first line from Promontory Point to Stockton. The post office at Manteca opened on November 15, 1875, and was renamed Antelope until 1959 when it changed its name to Manteca after Supervisor Henry J. "Hank" Manteca. The town has been home to a number of businesses including a large feed mill and two hospital branches before they were merged into one hospital in 1984 which still operates today as Manteca Regional Medical Center. Manteca is also known for its annual pumpkin festival which takes place on the last weekend in October and features local artisans making pumpkin pies, selling them from carts throughout the town square, and eating them during halftime of games at minor league baseball stadiums across the county.
Manteca, California was founded in 1853 by John C. Fremont and named for the Manteca River in New York State. The first post office was established at Manteca in 1854. In 1865, the town became an agricultural center with a population of about 100 people. A sawmill and flour mill were built in 1868 and 1870, respectively. The population grew to 350 people by 1880 but declined to 150 by 1890 due to a variety of factors including the Panic of 1893 and the Waco Massacre that year. The townspeople took up arms against Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War (1865-1869) and lost many men in battle. In 1867, they reorganized as the "Manteca Union" and participated in a successful campaign against Mexican forces near San Francisco Bay. In 1872, they erected a schoolhouse on land donated by Captain James Wolksteiner of Fort Ross; it served as their local government until 1915 when it was replaced by a new building which still stands today. In 1903, Manteca voters approved an ordinance providing for water service within their limits from Anza Springs westward to Red Bluff eastward; this marked the beginning of heavy development within their boundaries which continues to this day. On October 10, 1916, Manteca residents created a fire department after seeing reports of arson from other townsfolk across central California; this event is generally considered to be the start of modern Manteca culture.
