Manteca, California is a small town located in the south-central part of California. The population was 3,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Manteca-Agua Caliente Metropolitan Statistical Area. Manteca was founded in 1887 by John C. Fremont and his brother Charles Fenton as a post station on the Butterfield Overland Mail route between Sacramento and San Francisco. The first school in Manteca was built in 1892. The town became an agricultural center after settlers developed fruit orchards, vegetables, hayfields, and dairy farms hereabouts. Manteca has had its share of successes and failures during its history. In 1887 it became one of the few communities to be approved for annexation into Sacramento County when that county was established following the Mexican-American War; however this annexation never came to fruition because then-Governor John Goodwin opposed it on grounds that it would make Manteca too close to Mexico City. In 1905, local businessmen Henry Jaffe and Harry Weisman formed what became known as "The Weisman Company" which manufactured airconditioning equipment for various businesses throughout Northern California; their product soon became popular due to its efficient operation and low price tag compared with other manufacturers’ products at that time. Katharine Hepburn's husband Gregory Peck made his screen debut in "I Can't Stop the Feeling!" (1957) at Manteca High School where he attended as a student; he later graduated from nearby Loyola University Los Angeles with a law degree while living there with his wife Jane Wyman (née Gleason). One notable resident of Manteca during this time was future United States President George H.W. Bush who attended Bishop Frost Elementary School before moving on to Stonington Preparatory School near Bellingham before graduating from high school there in 1954; he then went on to attend Yale University where he earned a Bachelors degree in economics before serving three terms as Governor of Texas from 1987 until1993 under President Ronald Reagan (he would have become president if incumbent George W Bush were not elected instead). During World War II, many residents served in the military including William Pogue who worked at Lockheed Aircraft Corporation's plant adjacent to town—the only one such facility within two miles of Manteca—during both world wars; Pogue is also considered one of local heroes having received numerous awards for his service including being awarded two Distinguished Service Medals and four

In the late 19th century, Manteca experienced a period of growth and development that is still remembered today. One of the most significant changes that took place in Manteca during this time was the growth of transportation which allowed for more people to move to the city and make it their main residence.
