It is part of the Kern County seat and the largest city in Kern County by population. He anchored at present day Pier 84 just out from shore when he sighted an Indian warship anchored off shore about 12 miles away with modern cannons manned by 25 Apache warriors under Captains Manuel Michelini and Antonio Lopez de Neveu captained by José Ortiz Ramos y Costilla alias “Don José’s bandido” In addition to these hostile Indians there were 200 or so more Chinamen living ashore among us all engaged in planting corn which we did most plentifully This vessel being manned only by our own men she lay here until noon next day whenCaptain Copley went ashore again with letters of marque [certificate] under his arm having been directed theretoby Commodore Perry himself Weighed anchor again at two P M next day drew alongside while they got up anchors to proceed without us Captain Copley sending ahead two boats filled with armed men affording security for our boatmen When within gunshot distance of her he put off quickly taking care not to fire upon her but contenting himself with boarding her side With some fifty rounds shot through him they threw overboard his body still wearing his uniform alive without making any Resistance value: A very noble event happening at that time Our country being then much divided between those who sided with Mexico and those who supported England I cannot say too much about it other than that such things did happen then & thereabouts One can only conjecture how things would have ended if Commodore Perry had not come along These events are commemorated each year on Independence Day by erecting a plaque outside of City Hall honoring both CaptainsJohnCopleyandManuel Micheliniwitha plaque reading: “To USS Discovery - For protection from hostile Indian vessels - June 22nd 1847” As early as 1850 settlers started arriving in Manteca from Northern California via pack trains brought overland across Sierra Nevada mountains using Stagecoach stageways built specifically for this purpose including Wm Butterworth who settled at Belle Haven Ranch opposite current site of downtown Manteca where water supply began delivered today usingThat same route becoming an important factor leading to development around truck stops and other retail businesses along Hwy 99 today
