Manteca was founded by Hiram Bingham in 1847 as a small post office on the west side of what is now Pleasanton Creek. Manteca was incorporated as a city on July 1, 1907. The name comes from Spanish el mantequilla meaning "sweet butter." Dingwall and others suggest that it may be derived from an incident where a group of men were playing at being Indians when one threw a rock that made a large hole in an old oak tree and they all had to gather around to get their share of the booty. From this spot they named their new settlement after José de la Cueva y Valdivia who fought for Mexico against British forces during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1915 it became home to America's first international fair which attracted more than $100,000 in revenue and helped spur economic development throughout Manteca and its environs. The City Council voted 5-1 on November 15, 2014 to annex parts of unincorporated Hercules Valley east of Manteca Boulevard including portions of hills north and south of Hanson Road and east along I-880 between Swan Lane and White Sands Boulevard. This annexation means that residents will have access to services offered by Manteca through its new combined government agency - Manteca Park District - as well as access to parkland located within the annexed area east of Hanson Road and west along I-880 between Swan Lane and White Sands Boulevard.
