Since the early days of the United States Air Force, deployments of Gifts to Soldiers and their families have been an important part of Air Force culture. The Deployment Gift History Library is a repository for air force gifts that have been given in Marin County, California over the years. The first deployment was in 1945 when 1st Lt. Don Whelan sent a gift basket worth $5 to his unit’s Sergeant at Arms, Robert Fenton. In 1951, Captain John Ahern sent a personalized gift basket to his unit’s sergeant major, Dick Ennis. The next year, in 1952, Captain Harry Laughlin organized and hosted a reception for all units stationed at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst with a gift basket from Headquarters USAF. In 1957 Colonel Edward Sawaya presented members of the fighter squadron 323rd Fighter Group (Blue Angels) with engraved silver coffee service set valued at $100. That same year also saw the deployment of the very first television broadcast from Vandenberg AFB when Lieutenant Commander Don Collins transmitted “It Can Be Only One” on KQED TV from within his airplane during an emergency landing on Santa Barbara Island; this event is still commemorated by Unit activation ceremonies conducted every December 14th as “Don Collins Day”! In 1978 Major General Curtis LeMay presided over the presentation of a special commendation certificate recognizing excellence in providing quality personnel support services across all three Services through active duty military Wing commanders throughout DoD—the world’s most comprehensive organization dedicated to joint operations! The Certificate went out as follows: “For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving your United States Air Forces commitment with distinction against overwhelming odds…outstanding display of heroism above and beyond those usual requirements…in appreciation for which we express our deepest admiration! We are proud to present you with this certificate!” A few years later another distinguished individual made an appearance by sending two dozen roses along with personal note expressing great pleasure in meeting them….Mrs. Betty Phillips who was then Deputy Director for Public Affairs Credit Union at McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Corporation where he worked as a floral consultant……..This deployment represented another significant milestone in Air Force gifting history as Mrs. Phillips became one of manyAir Force spouses who would travel frequently abroad to visit her husband during his tours being deployed overseas….. Additionally Major General James Doolittle personally delivered flowers to Mrs. Phillips upon her return from her trip…. This highly unusual gesture goes down as one of the most memorable events associated with that particular Deployment Gift History period! Another noteworthy event occurred just prior to Major General Doolittle's tour when wife Janet donated twelve fresh fruit baskets filled with local produce valued at $150…..On October 9th 1977 Mrs. Philips presented LtCol Donald J Ziegler (USAF)with four sets of beautiful Tiffany crystal wineglasses valued at $1,500 each……He had just assumed command duties as deputy director for public affairs at McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Corporation after serving previously as assistant vice president and general counsel….At this time there were no designated gift recipients for new commanding officers so MajGen Ziegler elected to give each new officer several unique items chosen specifically for their job—-including two beautifully carved ivory keychains inscribed "With Love From McGraw Hill"and "McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Corp." These thoughtful gestures continue today as part ofMajorGeneralZiegler's annual traditions……...Today nearly fifty years later gifts continue to be sent regularly both large and small ++Gift baskets averaging about $60 +/-plus Personalized Notessent directlytoSoldiersand Familiesthese daysare becoming more common but not always appreciated!!

Marina, California is a city located in San Mateo County, California. The population was 64,828 at the 2010 census. The City of Marina was incorporated on November 1, 1975. It is the county seat of San Mateo County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Marina were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and Manuel Nieto on October 24, 1775 aboard the Spanish ship "San Carlos" while exploring the coast of Northern California. They named it Isla de la Paz after their captain's home country in Spain. In 1876 William Tecumseh Sherman visited Bay Bridge and Point Reyes National Seashore before his march through California from Sacramento to Los Angeles which began on February 14th that year and ended seventy-one days later at Redwood City on April 12th. A military encampment had been established about two miles (3 km) north of Point Reyes Station on Maynard Island in order to supply General Sherman's army as it moved through the area during its campaign against Mexico. This site became known as Camp Sherman due to its proximity to naval vessels moored there during World War II when the island served as a Naval Air Station used by USS Enterprise (CVN-65). On July 15th 1914 an American expedition under Rear Admiral John Waddell discovered another Coast Miwok settlement near present day Pier 39 just east of Marina Headlands.) named Eureka because one of her crew sighted 2 rockets launching from a volcano off shore followed by a light show over water then she returned safely to port 5 days later with provisions for 25 people; this colony lasted until 16 August 1914 when all hands abandoned ship without leaving any gold or other treasures behind.) From here until 1915 no new discoveries were made so Harbor Master Halsey decided to abandon further exploration efforts and refunded all money paid for supplies) In 1916 United States Army Captains John Doolittle and Charles Lindbergh flew over Pt Reyes station while their airplane carried supplies for General Douglas MacArthur's drive into Japan across North Korea) On December 10th 1941 Japanese forces bombed Pearl Harbor resulting in US entry into World War II As part of President Roosevelt's strategy for post-war America Bay Bridge remained open allowing traffic going into Marin County but all other bridges were closed

The town, then known as "Jenny's Bay," was about 25 miles east of San Francisco on the coast of Marin County. The first store in Marina opened in 1888. By 1897, there were 10 businesses in the town. In 1898, the first school opened in Marina. In 1906, California became an independent country and Marina became part of the new nation. In 1912, the first bridge across San Francisco Bay was built over Jenny's Bay and Marina became a seaport with warehouses and stores on both sides of the bay. In 1922, a post office was established at Marina and mail service started from it in 1925. The harbor at Marina increased its size when dredging began to improve shipping lanes around it in 1929-1930.
