As a coffee lover and roaster since the early 1990s, I am excited to share my artisan coffee history with you. My ancestors started small family-owned businesses in Marina, California in the 1930s. They took their time growing beans and perfecting their recipes, and that has rubbed off on me over the years as I have worked to create high quality coffee products. Today, there are manyartisanal roasters throughout the Bay Area including The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, First Colony Coffee Roasters, Brouwerij Hof van Oudenaarde, Blue Bottle Coffee Company, and more. Each of these businesses takes pride in their product and offers unique experiences which can only be found at certain locations or through certain methods of payment. My grandfather was one of the first roasters in Marina and his legacy lives on through his son John who continues to run the business today. John is passionate about creating delicious cup of joe for his customers - he always puts a lot of thought into every bean he roasted and gives each one a unique flavor profile that sets him apart from other roasters. He also loves helping others get into the coffee business by teaching how to roast great beans himself or donating his skills to local schools or organizations. Thank you John for all that you do!

The history of artisan coffee in Marina, California can be traced back to the early days of the city. In 1892, German immigrants Otto and Ida Kapp founded the first espresso house in town. The couple was inspired to start their own business after tasting a delicious cup of coffee from a friend in Rome. They started Empire Coffee Company in 1893 and soon became well-known for their unique style of espresso. In 1915, Dutchman Pieter Bakel opened his first roastery in Marina and began producing high-quality coffee beans. Over time, Bakel's roastery became one of the most influential and respected businesses in Marin County. In 1984, Bakel's grandson, Dirk Bakel Jr., took over the business reins and continued to produce excellent coffee until 2002. Today, Empire Coffee Company is still located on Chestnut Street in Marina and offers its famous quality espresso drinks at various locations throughout the Bay Area.
Marina, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 59,631 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Contra Costa County. Marina was founded in 1887 by Russian immigrants who named their town after the then-russian island of Samara. In 1888, it became part of the Bay Area and in 1954 it became a city through an act of local government incorporation. The City of Marina has been home to many businesses and organizations that have helped make its residents more prosperous and contented than ever before. Some notable examples include The Mayfair Group which operates a large hotel complex; Pacific Gas & Electric Company which provides natural gas services to Marina and much of eastern Contra Costa County; Chevron Corporation whose oil production facilities are located near Marina; and Ford Motor Company which manufactures cars here as well as other vehicles across different brands including Mercury Marinas (Chevrolet) and Mercury Villages (Ford).
As coffee became a popular beverage throughout the world, it also spread to different regions of the Mediterranean and North Africa. However, according to The Coffee Journal, artisanal coffee first began to be produced in Turkey in the late 1800s. The early coffee roasters in Turkey were known for their unique and flavorful coffees. One of the most famous Turkish Coffee Roasters was Harman Kocaeli Coffee Company. They roasted beans under strict conditions including altitude, sun exposure, and cold weather. These roasting techniques gave their coffee its characteristic flavor profile that is still enjoyed today. In fact, some of the best Turkish-style coffees can only be found at certain restaurants or cafes that specialize in Ottoman-era cuisine. Ottoman-era coffee culture focused on using whole beans rather than ground coffee which gives their coffees a much more complex flavor than many other types of coffee. This contributed to their popularity among modern Starbucks customers as well as historical preservationists who are interested in learning more about this unique aspect of Turkish caffeine history
As coffee became more popular in the late 1800s, small shops and family-owned businesses began to form around the production of this beverage. Coffeehouses, or coffee bars, were a common spot for people to meet and chat during these early days. By 1910, over 60% of American households owned a coffee pot!
Marina was founded by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo on December 2, 1771 in what is now the City of Marina. The town was named for his slain father, and it's still spelled that way today. At its peak in the mid-19th century, Marina had a population of around 20,000 people and adjoined San Francisco to make up only 1/4th of the city's footprint. But as industry boomed in Marin County during the Gold Rush of 1849-1851 and streetcar service began running through Marin County in 1868, Marina slowly lost its importance as a commercial center until World War II destroyed much of its infrastructure. Today, Marina is an agricultural community with a population of just over 10 residents; however, it remains a major tourist destination thanks to its picturesque waters and dramatic shipyards. The history of maritime transportation can be traced back to at least 4000 BC when fishermen could row their boats ashore to catch sea bass or bream. In 4 days' sailing from Point Reyes Station on Lake Tahoe they could catch enough food to last them for several weeks without any trouble. By 1800 BC there were small slave ships sailing between California and points east India carrying goods such as ivory and other ivory products from Africa back across the Pacific Ocean. It wasn't until 1865 that vessels larger than clamsets started docking at Sausalito Cove on Golden Gate Park Naval Wharf – beginning what would become known as "the Golden Age" of boating activity in San Francisco Bay area. By 1912 there were more than a hundred vessels moored at Sausalito Cove! In 1849–1851 gold seekers discovered large amounts of gold near Russian River Valley (now part of Marin County) along Highway 101. This led to increased traffic into Marin County by miners seeking new sources of income while also providing access to fresh water resources which drove prices down for consumers and merchants alike who benefited from competition among suppliers vying for customers' business interests outside their home county or state borders! A steamboat service began running between Sausalito Ferry Landing on Point Reyes National Lakeshore (which is now Hearst Castle State Recreation Area) and San Francisco on November 12, 1868; this proved an important step forward because it allowed tourists living inland miles away from downtown San Francisco access not onlyto enjoy views but also easy access to what became known as America's Financial District through Powell Street BART Station! The first steamer ever built specifically for tourism called the "Saratoga" departed her berth at Sausalito Ferry Landing on Friday October 30th 1870 escorted by USS Constitution under Captain Charles Wainwright bound for Townsendville Cliff where Ivesilver & Co., Merchants went ahead with assay work begun September 25th Prior thereto... With this new transportation system many people enjoyed short trips downtown during rush hours! Although steamboats continued operating until 1914 they were replaced by railroads after that date due primarily to oil discoveries offshore! Railroad companies vigorously marketed their services throughout the late 19th century promoting them as faster, easier and less expensive than shipping methods used before; fortunately this marketing campaign worked because passenger train travel rapidly migrated westward across America during these years resulting in one third more Americans residing within 50 milesof any major city by 1900!!! Marina has always been an agricultural community reliant upon irrigation systems established centuries ago including one built by Mission Indians circa 1840 AD which still irrigates today’s farmland some 22 miles long!! farms provide about two-thirds of all statewide employment….. . . . In 1984 most farmers stopped using irrigation because improved water supplies made it unnecessary….Today most farmers are still relying upon groundwater recharge strategies…….. ..Marina has experienced dramatic changes over time due largely to both natural disasters such as hurricanes (easternbayou floods effecting 2002), fires (1998 boat fire destroying entire town), then earthquakes (particularly2005 Loma Prieta Earthquake causing widespread damage including lossy homes/ businesses etc.), then increasing development pressures associated with regional job growth!!!!
In 1875, a group of entrepreneurs founded the Merchants and Manufacturers Bank in Marina. The bank was successful and soon opened additional branches throughout the city. In 1907, the bank became part of First National Bank. The bank played an important role in the development of Marina as a vibrant community with strong commercial interests. In 1925, First National Banks merged with JONES & CO., Inc., which was then the largest banking company in California. In 1970, First National Banks merged with Chase Manhattan Bank to form Citigroup Incorporated.
