Gun gift history in Marina, California began with the purchase of a shotgun by Edna and Harry Pollock in 1928. The Pollocks were the first owners of the Marina Gun Shop on shoreline Drive. The gun shop was located on what is now known as Second Street. In 1933, Harry Pollock passed away and his wife Edna continued to operate the store until her death in 1984. From 1934-1936, Harry Pollock’s son Ned operated the gunshop while his daughter Lois ran it during their father’s absence. In 1936, ownership of the business passed to Alonzo “Fritz” Weisbach who operated it until 1945 when it was sold to George Prentice. Prentice renamed it The marina Gun Shop and continued to sell shotguns until 1978 when he sold it to Don Curbishley. Curbishley renamed it again in 1981 to The marina Pistol & Ammo Store and continues to sell handguns today. The Marina area of California is located on the Pacific Ocean, just south of San Francisco Bay. The area was first populated by Native Americans, who named it Pura Vida in honor of the Virgin Mary. In 1792, Captain George Vancouver explored and charted what is now Marin County. He named four rivers and two bayous in this area: TheMarinette River, theSan Pablo Bay, and Tiburon Bay. In 1851, a group of entrepreneurs led by John Fenton founded a ferry service between Sausalito and Marin City. This allowed goods to be transported between these two towns without having to go through San Francisco. The ferry also became a means for people to get around the Golden Gate Bridge. By 1870, there were over twenty-five ferries operating from Marin County alone. During World War II, Marinas served as both military and naval bases for the United States Navy and Marine Corps. During the war, many families moved into Marin County because of job opportunities in the munitions industry or defense work at various sites around Northern California such as Point Reyes Station or Sonoma Valley. Many current residents are direct descendants of those early settlers. After World War II ended, Marin County experienced rapid growth due to technological advances such as television production companies clustering around Sausalito and Menlo Park; however much growth occurred outside of town due to new development such as Highway 101 which sliced through rural areas making life difficult for farmers living near Interstate 80 . In recent years there has been an effort to revive some aspects of Marin culture including traditional music festivals throughout summertime and Shakespeare performances at local theaters
