Marina, California is a city located in Marin County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 77,567. The city is named after Russian Admiral Ivan Pahlen and his wife Marina Kuznetsova. The first inhabitants of Marin were Ohlone people who lived along the lower bayou banks from 1 AD to 10 AD. They built huts made of logs with thatched roofs and hunted seals, their Principal Product: Turtle shell oil which they used for lamps, soaps and other household items. In 1851, American Commodore John D. Sloat anchored his ship "Narcissus" at what is now Point Reyes National Seashore to hunt whales off Point Reyes Station on Marin County's north coast. A group of men from San Francisco collected driftwood for building ships at Point Reyes National Seashore and began selling wood from nearby bluffs to sailors in 1852. The first vessel powered by steam arrived at Pt Reyes in 1857; it was called the "Narcissus". In 1906-07 USGS Surveyor General Emory Heston directed excavations near Anacapa Island in order to map alluvial gold deposits lying within an area extending northeasterly from present-day Marina Bay into Elliott Bay mud flats (now part of Golden Gate Park). At this time there were no permanent occupants anywhere within sight or sound of any known gold deposit; however local fishermen had been finding small amounts of gold coins and nuggets over a period dating back several years previous when dredging operations had not been conducted systematically throughout much or any part of Marin County as then generally construed! Investigations revealed numerous very large BarshamianGold Deposits including some up to 50 pounds weight having been found as recently as 1902 Some 32 acres have since been developed over an area largely composedof Barhamian Goldfields intersecting with various faultsand ridges forming many interlocking systemsthat are today easily observable on aerial photographs! These investigations led to the development by Mr Harry Wickersham & Sons Limited (later Harry Wickersham Mines)of a large open-pit mine workings beginning production Sept 9th 1907 & lasting until 1916 producing about $4 million worth of GOLD!! Today these remains are still visible northeast alongshore just south Of POINT RHEES Yacht Harbor entrance!!! So significant was this discovery that Eminent Domain proceedings were instituted against USCG authorities responsible for allowing this mining operation without prior permit & ultimately resulted in their acquittal!! While such good news does nothing to diminish our feeling about our LOCAL GOLD CREEK...It does demonstrate (& suggests even more urgently) how important it is for everyone interestedin MARINA'S GENERALLY RESTLESS CITY ECONOMY TO GET INVOLVED IN THE GOVERNMENT OF THEIR COUNTRY!!!!! Pope Francis visited Marin County during his trip through Northern California on March 14th - 15th 2016 He spoke at different locations around town including Stinson Beach where he met children playing outside school before traveling aboard a bus back home
