Marina is a city located in San Diego County, California. It has an estimated population of 154,000. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total area of 86.5 square miles (239 square kilometers). The City of Marina was founded on December 11, 1911 by Captain John Waddell and his wife Cornelia Dyer Waddell as a military post to protect shipping lanes in the Inland Sea from enemy submarines. The first naval installation in San Diego was at Point Loma on April 20, 1846 when Commodore George Dewey moved his squadron of ships from Fremont Bay to Loma Prieta point. Naval forces were based at Point Loma until 1898 when they were moved to Mare Island Naval Shipyard for their final years of service before being decommissioned and sold off to various owners. In 1909, the City Council passed a resolution authorizing the purchase by the City of Marina of land northward along present-day Avenida de la Marina into which would be built a Navy Yard for storage and use by Marines during World War I with funds raised through charitable donations and sales tax revenues generated by local businesses that participated in the effort. The money was used for shipbuilding projects throughout World War I including USS "Pensacola" (CA-24), USS "Tiburon" (CA-27) and USS "Stateroom No. 5". On July 1st 1914 the first Marine contingent disembarked from USS "Pensacola" at Pier 21 after its voyage down San Dieguito Creek from Long Beach loaded with munitions destined for Mexico during World War I; it was followed less than two weeks later by Marines disembarking from USS "Tiburon" at Pier 22 following its voyage down United States Coast Guard Harbor Boulevard laden with munitions destined for Europe during World War I; these two vessels acted as both embarkation points for troops coming ashore on Long Beach Peninsula during the pre-dawn hours preceding embarked amphibious assaults against Guam or Tinian Islands aboard landing craft called LCI's designated Assault Craft#1 - Assault Craft#2 - Landing Craft#3
