Marina, California is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, and the seat of San Luis Obispo County government. The population was 24,028 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the Pacific Ocean coast at an elevation of 33 feet (10 m). The first people to live near present-day Marina were Missionaries who built missions there in 1821. With the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), American forces landed at Monterey Bay and sailed up the coast to Topo Chico where they met Mexican General Pio Pico. On July 25, 1847, U.S. Commodore John D. Sloat ordered USS Constitution under Commodore William Farragut to bombard Vallejo while supplies were being unloaded from ship Santa Clara; this event is generally thought to be the beginning of U.S.–Mexican war[1]. In 1863 residents of Ventura founded their own town called Benicia because they could not get water from Tomales River which ran through Marineland.[2] In 1865–66 residents of Marina built themselves a lighthouse on Point Reyes Peninsula after failing to find one in nearby Tomales.[3] In 1870–71 Harbor Commission Commissioners decided that an artificial harbor would make sense on Point Reyes Peninsula and ordered construction by contractor WL Halsey Beall started immediately with designs by Captains George Edmunds and Edward Everett Whitehead[4]. After years of construction and delay both from lack of appropriations and sabotage by local navvies some progress was made during World War II when Naval Landing Shipbuilding Yard(NLV) finished building PC-4 amphibious assault ship USS Guadalupe (LST-468) at Point Reyes National Seashore . When Americans took over Japan following World War II Marina became known as Mariana Island because no resident country claimed it until 1959 when Philippines did so with new name “Mariana Islands” but never asserted sovereignty over it[5][6][7]. Today’s Marina is named for Captain James Cook who explored the area in 1792 while exploring northwestern Asia for Spain during his third voyage aboard HMS Endeavour[8], though he only saw land about 12 miles (19 km) wide including what is now downtown Marinaopolis [9]: At first Europeans thought he had been sailing into India or China when he actually sighted Juan de Fuca Strait between Alaska and Victoria Island off southeastern corner Puget Sound on September 26th 1792,[10] days before Eliza Parish mission was established at Whatcom Headland opposite today’s Discovery Museum ashore on cape Flattery
