Marina is located on the San Francisco Peninsula north of Sausalito and south of Tiburon. The first known European to visit Marineland was Captain James Cook who anchored off Point Reyes in 1797. The area now comprising Marina was part of Rancho Rincon de la Luna until 1853 when it was transferred to the Rancho Santa Clara de las Pulgas. In 1868, $10,000 in gold coins were found near what is now Yerba Buena Island and this led to an influx of settlers and development including the opening of the first store in San Francisco Bay by J. Pierpont Morgan on December 12th, 1868. In 1870s businessman John Haines developed land north of town along Mission Bay for his family’s cattle ranch which included a large water well that became one of Marineland’s earliest attractions for tourists The City Council approved annexation by Marin County on November 3rd, 1916 and incorporation as a city on December 12th following passage of an act by the State Legislature . It is located on the southern end of San Diego Bay and is home to Naval Base Point Loma. The first permanent settlement in what is now Marina was made by pioneering sailor John Cudahy in 1821 while he was serving as captain of the brig "Aurora". He named his small community after his late wife, Marina (née Smyth). In 1825, Commodore George Dewey designated Point Loma as the new naval base for San Diego Bay and soon large numbers of sailors from all over America started arriving here to serve on Navy ships and man local shore batteries.
