The Martinez Air Force Base was founded in 1942 as the San Fernando Valley Air Field. The base served as a training ground for the California National Guard, and was home to two PT-1 flying boats and four P-38 Lightning fighter planes during World War II. It also hosted an air show each year from 1947 to 1951. In 1951, the United States Air Force activated its first bomber wing at Martinez AFB with the Boeing B-47 Stratojet Bomber. The wing was organized into three groups, each with fifteen bombers. In 1957, the USAFactivated the third group of bomber wings at Martinez AFB with the Boeing E-4 Sentry airplane. This became the present day 398th Bomb Wing (Aerial) which has a mission of providing combat support for Operation Desert Storm in 1991 and 1992. Martinez AFB is now home to four squadrons of F-15 Eagle fighters and six squadrons of F/A-18 Hornets; it also hosts ten other aircraft including five Cessna 172s and four Beechcraft 1900s. For more than fifty years, Martinez AFB has been a critical stop on US military flights across America’s Southwest desert region – helping provide essential air cover for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as conducting overflights over Los Angeles County airspace during major holidays such as Christmas, Easter, Independence Day and Thanksgiving.

Martinez, California is a town located in Contra Costa County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 41,898. The name Martinez comes from Spanish meaning "place where cows go to calve." The first European to visit what is now Martinez was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 15th 1542 when he and his ship San Diego anchored off the coast of present day Marin County. He named the area after Father Fray Alonso de Monterey who had accompanied him on this journey from Mexico City. The first permanent settler in Martinez was José Joaquín Valdivia who arrived on November 30th 1821 with his wife María Luisa Pacheco and their four children including Francisco Javier Valenzuela y Valdivia (Juan Bautista Valenzuela). Valdivia named the community "Fuerte de Santiago" or "Fortress of Saint John". In 1835 Don Fernando Romero became owner of Rancho San Pablo which extended over much of what is now Martinez and included parts of Contra Costa County as well as Alameda County. This rancho began to be divided into small parcels by Land Act titles starting with Miguel Hidalgo's purchase in 1848 which gave land grants to individuals and families among others including Antonio Peña Nieto (1851), Felipe Carrillo (1857), Manuel Miranda y Blanco (1859), José Joaquín Herrera y Costilla (1861) between them forming part of what became known as Rancho Santa Clara/Rancho San Pablo/Addendum Valley Mexican land grant system which lasted until 1912 when it merged into United States Land Grant System . By 1850 about 60% of all Nunes family holdings were within the new incorporation boundaries created by law while just 10% remained within Mexican territory following division resulting from war-time acquisitions during American occupation . From 1870 until 1890 most sporadic settlement took place along creek beds outside incorporated boundaries due mainly to lack of transportation facilities available inside limits then increasing development around political subdivisions established by state legislature during Reconstruction period following Civil War era . Between 1880-1920 growth rates averaged about 1%. Migration increased during this period although some people settled permanently while others moved intermittently according to needs or opportunities

The population grew rapidly during this time and many new residences were built in what is now downtown Martinez. During World War II, Martinez played an important role as a bomber plant for American bombers flying over Japan. The city was heavily bombed by Allied forces between 1945 and 1948 but no damage resulted from the bombings themselves
