The Martinez Army National Guard's 26th Infantry Brigade (Light) was activated in 1963 and has served in a number of different theaters of operation. The brigade is currently deployed to Iraq with the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines. The first deployment was to Vietnam where the brigade fought alongside United States Marine Corps units. After two years of fighting they were withdrawn back to the United States and did not come back until 1975 when they were called back for another deployment to Southeast Asia. They served in that theater for five years before being redeployed to West Germany in 1984 as part of Operation Neptune's Spear which involved recovering forbidden weapons from North Vietnam. After their return home they were sent once again to Viet Nam where they served until 1991 when they returned home and disbanded. Martinez, California is a city located in the southern portion of San Bernardino County, California. The population was 66,568 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Martinez region has been inhabited by the Tongva people since 4000 BC. It served as an outpost on what is now Interstate 10 between Riverside and Ontario counties until it moved to its present location on Main Street in 1886 when townspeople petitioned for a proper Post Office Building they could use themselves rather than just passing through on their way to work elsewhere in town. At that time, Martinez also became one of only two cities west of Sacramento without any railroad service (the other being Victorville). In 1915 when US Route 66 was built through central Southern California, Martinez became an important stop along the route due to its strategic location midway between Los Angeles and Orange County; it remained so until after US routes 66 and 70 intersected southbound at Fresno in 1951 while US routes 666 and 670 continued diverging eastward concurrent with I-10 southbound; finally I-10 truncated these separate roads before rejoining I-66 northbound about 2 miles outside Martinez properalong modern day Moreno Road.) Martinez is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 8,824 at the 2010 census. Martinez was founded in 1867 by José Martinez and named for his father, Francisco Martinez. The first post office in Martinez was established on July 16, 1870, and the name of the town changed to San Joaquin in 1871. In 1875, the town became part of Riverside County; it remained a separate municipality until 1949 when it merged with Kern County. The last official merger took place on November 15, 1984 when both Kern and Riverside counties were combined into one large county. The history of Martinez dates back to 1867 when José Martinez established himself as a landowner and trader in what is now southeastern Kern County. He named his new settlement after his father-in-law Don Pedro Garcia who had served as captain general of Mexican forces during the California Gold Rush of 1850-1851. The first permanent residents arrived in February or March 1870 and soon began trading goods with settlers living near Los Angeles on the east side of the Sierras. By September 1870, about twenty families had settled around what is now downtown Martinez; most were women and children who followed José's advice to farm whatever they could find along riverbanks or along irrigation canals that ran through their townships. In May 1886 Big John Kearny sold 3 million acres (10 km2) comprising almost all present day Kern County to Isabella Earle Teague for US$5 million; this purchase allowed Teague to extend her holdings westward into today's Bakersfield area which she had not been able to do before because she lacked title to any real estate within that territory. John Martinez was born in 1847 in Martinez, California. He worked as a postmaster and served as mayor of Martinez from 1865 to 1870. John married Anna Parks in 1870 and they had two children. In 1876, John moved to San Francisco and started a dry goods store. In 1887, he became vice president of the Bay Bridge Company and helped develop the bridge into one of the leading transportation arteries on the continent. He also served as chairman of the city council from 1889 to 1893. In 1902, John died at age 87 years old.
