Martinez, California is a city located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 137,827 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Los Angeles County and the ninth most populous city in Californias entire Univesity of California. Martinez has a Mediterranean climate (Köppen: Csb) with hotsummers and cool winters. The first European to visit Martinez was Captain Juan Rodríguez de la Rúa on July 17, 1692 during his overland trip from Mexico City to San Francisco Bay. He named it after Pedro de Monterey, governor of Peru and captain general of all New Spain up until his death in 1706. A mission was founded here by Franciscan friars in 1821 under Father Junípero Serra with help from Governor Antonio López y Banda who gave them land east of Mission San Gabriel Arcángel for their new mission town. In 1848 there were only about 30 residents living here when gold was discovered at Inyo County’s Oroville Mine which led to increased settlements as prospectors started finding small amounts of gold every year from that area until1859 when large veins were discovered off central Mono Lake near where Martinez now stands. Goldmining operations continued until 1906 when an earthquake destroyed many mines along with much of the surrounding countryside including Martinez leaving behind a ghost town today known as Rocksprings which still contains some evidence of mining activity dating back to that time
