Antonio López founded Los Angeles on April 2, 1797 while he was serving as captain of artillery with General José Maria Martínez y Menéndez during the Mexican War of Independence from Spain. In 1847, Hernando Cámpora patented the first subdivision map of present-day Martinez Township (Alameda County), including land that would eventually become Holy Cross Rancho (now part of eastern Contra Costa County). This grant included about three-quarters of present-day east side of Old Highway 395 north from downtown Martinez between Alameda Street/Highway 680 and MacArthur Boulevard/Old Highway 95 northwest from downtown In 1912 Sleepy Hollow Cemetery opened its doors to serve burials for people living in Martinez until 1965 when it became part of Holy Cross Cemetery Incorporated under state law number 19075 providing cemetery services statewide for all citizens regardless of religion or lack thereof within 1 year after incorporation; therefore providing burials for people living in present day Martinez through 2024 inclusive! The city was named after General Antonio López de Santa Anna who fought against Mexican independence during the Mexican-American War. Martinez has been one of the most populous cities in Los Angeles County since its incorporation as a municipality on January 1, 1909. The population of Martinez peaked at 187,521 in 1920 and declined to 149,671 by 1950 due to mass migration from the San Fernando Valley to other parts ofSouthern California. In 2000, the population was estimated at 162,711[1]. The history of Martinez can be traced back to 1853 when José Martinez and his wife María de la Concepción Guerrero immigrated from Spain with their four children apprehensively aboard an American brigantine called La Bahia (the Bay) which sailed from Barcelona for New York City on December 12th that year. Unfortunately for all concerned including José’s pregnant wife who had boarded along with him and their four young kids; they were shipwrecked off Point Conception about 350 miles east of San Francisco when bad weather caused them to run aground on a sandbank about midway between Point Conception and Monterey Peninsula. After spending several days ashore he finally made it back into town where he found himself employed as a printer’s apprentice under David Price (1796-1868). Price also happened to be one of the first white men born in what is now Martinez when he moved there in 1827 from Easton Township in Montgomery County PA[2].
