Martinez, California is the largest city in Contra Costa County and one of the most populous in Northern California. It is located on the San Pablo River, about 10 miles east of downtown Berkeley. The city was founded by Spanish settlers in 1777 as part of Rancho El Cerrito de Martinez. The area became a Mexican territory following the Mexican-American War. In 1848, it was named for General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, who had commandeered an American army to help repel Mexican invasion of Alta California. The first coffeehouses were opened in Martinez during the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1897, Mr. Coffee opened his first store at 16th and Center Streets, which remains open today as a museum with possessions from Mr. Coffee's time period including cups and saucers made from limonite (a type of coal) that date back to 1892. In 1916, Donut Shop owner Harry Smith opened what is now known as Donut World on University Avenue near 24th Street in Martinez – one of the earliest donuts places in CA In 1915, Arthur Peake began importing quality Arabica beans from Java to create his own blend called Peake's Arabia Blend which he sold under three different names before becoming know simply as Peake's Beans In 1951, Donner Bros., Inc.'s biggest rival within the coffee industry started selling its beans through small stores throughout Northern California called Denny’s Restaurants DennisDonner founded Donner Bros., Inc.,the world’s first franchised truck sales company that operated out of Davis Airport outside Sacramento where he sold refrigerated trucks carrying wine barrels (now known as coffee) over long distances until 1981 when he relocated his business to Antioch ,CA . By 1989 they were selling over 1 million pieces per year Alcohol prohibition ended with Mexico's defeat at Buena Vista Ridge during World War II; this event also led to an increase in smuggling activity along I-80 corridor resulting in increased traffic congestion around town economies ..... This resultededinincreased prices for goods imported into town limits because smugglers could no longer undercut local prices
