Martinez, California is known as the "City of Roses" for the many rose bushes that can be found throughout most of the city. The city was founded in 1848 by General Antonio Tejon and is located on the banks of San Pablo River. The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s due to its location and population growth. In 1909, Martinez became a full-fledged city and began to grow in popularity as a bedroom community for San Francisco. The Martinez, California military deployed gift history begins with the Spanish-American War of 1898. The city was host to a large U.S. military installation, Fort Davis, which served as a base for American forces during the war. After the war, the United States Congress created the National Defense Authorization Act of 1918 which allocated $5 million dollars to help arm and equip local defense organizations in California. This money helped fund new rifles and shotguns that were used by soldiers in Martinez and other nearby towns during World War I. In 1922, another appropriation from Congress funded armor acquisition for the local militia in Martinez and nearby communities. During World War II, ammunition storage facilities were built at both Fort Davis and Santa Margarita Island Naval Air Station (now Joint Base San Diego-Tijuana). Ammunition deliveries from these locations helped support American troops fighting in Europe. After the war ended, veteran servicemen returned home with new weapons and equipment that they needed to start businesses in their towns. Today, Martinez is home to a number of businesses that provide services to its residents including police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and food delivery service providers among others. The city also has an active military community that includes enlisted members as well as civilians who donate time or money towards local military events or initiatives such as Operation Noble Eagle which helps connect children with summer camp opportunities through creative arts programming
Martinez, California is a city located in Contra Costa County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 104,405. The Martinez city limits extend to the east and west sides of the San Francisco Bay Bridge. The city is named after José de la Cruz Martinez, who served as captain general of Mexican forces during the Californio-American War. The history of Martinez began with Mission San Diego de Alcalá on October 16, 1769. After years of construction and testing by Franciscans and soldiers under Captain José de Escobar y Costilla,mission San Diego was dedicated on November 12, 1776. It became known as La Esperanza because it offered hope for salvation to those who dwelt around it. In 1821 an act was passed giving authority to build rancho grants in Contra Costa County until it could be decided whether or not they should become cities. In 1849 prospectors discovered oil reserves at what is now Martinez Creek within convenient distance for development and soon oil production made Martinez one of Northern California’s most important towns. In 1860 a group led by James Waddle bought 1/4interest in Rancho Santa Clara from José Joaquin Murrieta for $5 per share; this would form the nucleus of Waddle & Company which later became ChevronTexaco Corporation’s first refinery outside Texas City (more about that later). A new post office called Easton was established in 1865 but no town sprang up to take its place; part of this may have been due to concerns over water availability given that much of Contra Costa County had been marginal land subject to wild fires since before Banning Purchase Time! In 1868 Elizondo & Ramos built a millrace across from present day downtown Martinez Dam while another company (D&RGW) built a flour mill on what is now Spanish Street near where General Motors future headquarters would stand some fifty years later! By 1890 there were 11 businesses operating out of 3 blocks in downtown including blacksmithing (later replaced by metal fabrication), grocery stores (at various locations), dry goods stores (including a hat store), banking offices (First National Bank), physician Drury’s House Inn and three hotels: The Palace Hotel(1890 – burned down 1908), Ridgefield House(1892 – burned down 1916) and finally the First Union Hotel(1914 – closed). Jesuit Father Junípero Serra consecrated Our Lady Of Guadalupe Catholic graveyard adjacent to current day Downtown Martinez on October 15th 1898 just prior to his removal from power following popular uprising against his rule! Banking operations moved from their original location at 5th and King Streets into new buildings at 6th and Guerrero Streets between 1895-1901 when First National Bank relocated from Milpitas after more than 100 years being located at 4th Street & Market Place! lithography printing operations opened their doors here also with Adolphus Greeley’s Print Shop taking advantage of local abandoned lumberyards starting January 1915! Finally residences started becoming available for purchase beginning around 1914 through 1922 with Federal Savings Bank moving into its current building overlooking Railroad Avenue just southwest corner thereof!! At this time although many people had grown familiar with our town name we still referred ourselves collectively as “The Citizens”! However we did start planning our first municipal election which took place November 2nd 1924!!! Although originally set for February 25th 1925 we were forced see that date bumped back several times due mainlytoSanta Clara County officials refusing permission any further delay in holding such an important event……… On December 12th 1926 residents voted overwhelmingly not only does incorporation take effect but City Council has responsibility for all aspectsof public life including police services etc !! Just priorto incorporation process citizens met inside CITY COUNCILroom 7051 ½ Grant Ave !! From then until annexation by other municipalities occurred Village meetings were held at irregular intervals ie once every two weeks…. formalities associated with incorporation were completed on March 14TH 1928 !! This marks both pompously formal beginnings corresponding almost exactly 150 years sinceMissionSanDiegodeAlcaláwas dedicated…..As early as 1886 Antonio Moreno had organized labor groups intent upon preventing speculation in local cotton fields thereby maintaining wages high enough so workers could live decent lives without needinglessly impoverishing themselves
