The first U.S. military forces were stationed in and around Martinez during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). Many of these residents decided to cross the Sonoma Mountains and head south into Martinez County. This prompted Colonel Augustus Wainwright of the 1st Infantry Regiment of California Volunteers to send a shipment of cannons, rifles, ammunition and other supplies from Sacramento to Martinez for distribution among local citizens. This event is known as Wainwright's Campaign and it was an important step in expanding American influence into what is now southern California. In 1855, following Mexico's capitulation at Buena Vista Heights, Commodore John D'Estrada organized a naval squadron under Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter in order to retake control of Baja California Peninsula from Mexico City's grasp. On July 24th, 1855, Porter sailed up San Francisco Bay and anchored off present day Martinez while his squadron prepared for action. The USS Porter ( flagship ) disembarked its marines at Punta Gorda on December 12th 1850 pursuant to Naval Agreement with Don José María del Carmen Yáñez de la Torre y Llanos y Echeverría y su Compañía de Seguridad Nationale - also known as "Los Piratas" - for service during protracted hostilities along the Mexican coast between 1849-1852 against Comandante Joaquín Morelos's insurgent force led by Joaquin Cámpora; eventually resulting in Morelos's surrender on February 3rd within two weeks after a long siege lasting six months with little relief available from ashore due both technical difficulties ashore as well as issues with resources being committed ashore by various land forces commanders including General Agustín Carrera; Navy Commander Commodore James Kappenbeck who successfully landed Marines at Vizcaya on November 25th aboard HMS Dolphin with Lieutenant First class John Hickey commanding them; Commodore George Fenton RNVR arrived at Vera Cruz October 5th aboard HMS Nemesis accompanied by Officers Commanding Squadron consisting of Captain Robert Falconer RNVR Captains Second Class Alfred Knox RNR & William Green RNR Minesweeper USS Constitution had been based out of Acapulco when she changed call waters September 9th 1850 having not made port since August 30th ..... [see photo] Commodore Fenton went ashore January 7th 1861 disembarking Marines after invasion Hermosa BeachNovember 8 th 1860.. He reported that water conditions were good but there were too many minesweepers making it difficult to operate effectively .... When he left January 10 th he reported: "Water conditions are improving but more minesweepers must be sent." On May 6 th 1863 Confederate Major General Sterling Price took possession of Mission San Rafael Arcangelico abandoned by the United States government four years earlier because its location near Point Conception made it too valuable for capture without providing sanctuary for American fugitives such as President Abraham Lincoln
