Martinez was founded on October 14, 1853 by Carlos Martinez and his brother José Martínez. It has been the seat of Contra Costa County since it was established on February 3, 1850. The first post office in Martinez was opened on December 12, 1854. The name of the town originates from Lieutenant General Antonio Francisco de Miranda y Costilla's journal entry dated November 24, 1775 that refers to "Hacienda los Martinez" (Place of the Martínes). The first settler in Martinez was José Sanchez who arrived in 1847 from Puebla Mexico. In 1853 Carlos Martinez founded what is now Martinez with his brother Jose Martínez as its first mayor and majority owner of the land grant called Rancho San Pablo which extended from present day Redwood City east to Oakland and west to Antioch.. This rancho became part of Alameda County when it was created on March 25, 1852. A school for white children only opened in Santa Clara Valley in 1885 but it closed in 1888 due to racism within the community against Asians living there (). A black school started up again at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church near downtown Martinez after a campaign led by civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. In 1916 Mexican-American pioneer Dolores Huerta moved to Martinez with her family following an attempted robbery by gunmen outfitted as Mexican bandits that occurred near El Sobrante outside Sacramento; Huerta's father had fought for Maximilian I during the Mexican Revolution and she had followed him into America as he made his way northward through Central Valley towns such as Stockton and Visalia before finally reaching Berkeley . After becoming active politically within the American Communist Party she left for Mexico permanently in 1940 when US President Franklin D Roosevelt closed off all borders between America and Mexico amid race riots throughout much of Latin America . Huerta would return briefly to visit her old home town twice during World War II before moving permanently back to Berkeley where she died four years later after serving time for sedition charges following her return .)
