Martinez, California is the town that has been known as the "coffee capital of the world." The city was founded in 1848 by Juan Martinez and named after his father-in-law, Don José de Valdivia. The first coffeehouses were located on Paseo de la Reforma, which is now a street called San Pablo. Coffee began to be grown in Martinez in the early 1800s and coffee beans were traded with Spain and other countries. In 1853, Josef Martinez founded the first commercial roasting company in California. By 1860, coffee was being roasted and sold by merchants throughout California. Martinez served as mayor of Martinez from 1865 to 1870 and as governor of Alta California from 1874 to 1880. From 1840 until 1850, there were two newspapers published in Martinez: La Republica del Paso de la Reforma (The Republic of Paso de la Reforma) and El Hombre Libre (The Free Man). In 1868, Francisco Riesner founded an insurance company in Martinez that became one of the largest companies in Northern California.

In 1976, they opened an office in San Francisco and began producing larger quantities of their coffee. The name Tactical Coffee was chosen because it represented the newly developed business model for them- as dealers rather than producers/sellers of single serve coffee products. This new model allowed them to build a large customer base without having to worry about distribution or marketing expenses. In 1978, they opened another office in New York City where they continued production until 1992 when they closed down due to financial problems.
